'Pirates' has been described as an opera, but this seemed (to me) to be clearly a musical. The sets were minimal, and costumes appeared in need of a bit of care (the Velcro holding Frederic's boot together was clearly coming apart) but that didn't really take away from the enjoyment. Carol Winston's high notes as Mable were crisp and beautifully on pitch, and I found her to be the high point of the show. The orchestra sounded fantastic, and were very charming as they raised their bows/batons/etc to wave to the audience from the depths of the orchestra pit.
I was told the Fox Theater recently underwent remodeling, which there was no indication of, and the interior was lovely. The theater itself was easily accessible.
Overall, I'm glad I got to attend the performance of a classic story in a beautiful venue.
