Tafelmusik presented a version of the Brandenburgs, and a Bach Orchestral Suite, that was played in a very small band (one instrument per part, generally) and as such showed Bach's melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic genius in the most transparent manner possible.
Most exquisite, however, was the unity with which all pieces were played. The group played as one mind for every phrase and entrance. The slight pauses at the end of certain phrases, the retards, and the dynamics were executed with such unanimity of purpose that one could imagine that a single person was playing all parts simultaneously.
Breathtaking!

Favorite moment: Anytime the soprano section had a high note. Their range sounds infinite--never a strain to reach the high ones--with NO vibrato. @

This is the second Tafelmusik concert I have attended--the first being Messiah back in December. Once again, the choir and baroque orchestra presented a superlative performance and demonstrated the extraordinary talents of the performers. The choir is a collection of musicians with distinct voices, yet all blend seamlessly together to produce a wonderful sound, and amazing diction. They are helped by the great venues in which they perform--in this case the George Weston Recital Hall.
The opening Bach piece from Cantata 148 was sublime, the first Handel was delightful, and the Lauridsen was the surprising gem of the evening, in my opinion. I have never heard Poulenc performed better, though he's not my favorite. I was disappointed that the hall wasn't sold out. Torontonians...you missed out!
