I have seen many operas in many places in Europe and here in the US and have been passionate about the genre since I was a little girl. I liked the way the unfinished score was dealt with plus the bringing in of "Offenbach" himself as a statue. However, Antonia's mother in a puppet? Various Dr. Miracles conducting all over the stage with lid up batons? It was distracting and didn't do much for the visual effect. The Bacarole was supposed to be sung together as a duet between soprano and mezzo. Here, it was dislodged, each singer doing her own thing. Katherine Rohrer's Muse/Nicklausse was wonderfully acted and sung and Karen Armstrong exceeded my expectations. The male parts, well, the less said the better. Gaetan Laperriere was underpowered as the four villains, and he lacked stage presence and vocal zeal. Not very threatening! Julian
Gavin tried hard, but his upper register sounded forced and the lower ones clouded. However, all small roles were excellently sung. Applause to the chorus as well!

Favorite moment: Beginning with the statue of Offenbach and the end with the chorus of everyone on stage. @
