This presentation was definitely worth doing. This was my first professional theatrical performance, and I was very well pleased with the performance as a whole. Everything was coherent, working together to end up with a magnificent performance. It was worth doing this performance because the ending was quite creative. I personally feel in love with the ending. The writer had a lot of creativity to let the lovers die together at the same time, unlike the original version. It was also worth doing because even though the whole play was not performed, the transitions between scenes and events were done very well. Also even though some parts of this performance where changed a bit from the original version, the performance kept its point and interested the audience.

As one would expect with Gounod's music, the choral music was lush and beautiful. It was beautifully implemented by the opera choir, under the able direction of the talented Kristin Roach. It was a rare treat to hear Timothy Jones in a cameo performance as Friar Laurence. His stage presence is as riveting as his voice. But for me, the highlight was the outstanding performance by Maria Alejandres. Not only was her voice gorgeous, but she was charming and engaging as an actress. She was so adorable that it was completely believable that Romeo could fall in love with her at first sight - always a trick to pull off with this plot. So glad I went!

This was my first opera experience EVER and it was AMAZINGGGG!!! The whole cast was magnificent, especially the leading lady who played Juliet! I've never heard such a beautiful voice! I look forward to future shows performed by the SA Opera!

This was my 1st opera ever and I was bowled over. The music made you float along .The singing was stupendous. The scenery and costumes took you back in time All together it was pure magic. They even had a running translation at the top of the stage so you didn't miss what was going on in the play. Like I said pure magic!!!!!

This was our first opera experience and it was great. Everyone did a great job and Juliet was superb. Her range was awesome. I particularly liked the animation of the cast during the party scenes; it made it fun. The Theater was a bit cold and I would have liked a bigger screen with the English words on it but overallit was a memorable experience.

dani- The whole experience was new to me. I enjoyed the play. The seats weren't that great. The orchestra was breathtaking as well. The super titles were a little off. Whoever was controlling the projection was not paying attention. And it's recommended to sit farther than row E, because looking up is a pain in the neck, literally.
kc- The lead Juliet (Maria Alejandres), her voice is amazing. It was painful looking up at the super titles. Parts of the play was humorous.

I thought the performance was well done. I am only wished it had started at 7 pm instead of 8 pm. That would probably be the only change I would have done.

The San Antonio Opera's production of H.M.S. Pinafore was delightful! The singing by the chorus was spot-on, and the talented soloists did not disappoint. The best part of the show was the over-the-top three reprises of "Never Mind the Why or Wherefore," which came to a climax with the prima dona cartwheeling onto the stage while singing.
The only downside was the acoustics at the Lila Cockrell; the orchestra frequently overwhelmed the vocalists, especially those in the higher ranges. Some rooms eat bass frequencies; this one seems to eat treble. If you were further back than Row M, you definitely heard the orchestra more than the singers. I blame the room rather than the performers.
Overall, a musically wonderful and charmingly choreographed performance. Great fun!

I had a good seat in the orchestra level. First act was pretty good, except for two occasions when the chorus and the orchestra were way off on timing with each other. Surprising in a professional performance. Was there not enough rehearsal time, was the conductor not clear in his directions, was the chorus not paying attention?
Second act was better with the the three principals, the Lord, the Captain, and Josephine being able to have some fun with their roles, and their personalities and abilities shone. All three were excellent throughout.
Rafe's character was rather two dimensional, but the role does not provide for much latitude. Cousin Hebe was completely miscast, she could act and sing well, but was entirely inappropriate for the role otherwise, at least in my opinion.
The cast was not using microphones, and at times their singing was swallowed up by the hall, especially when coming on from backstage. The chorus was particularly anemic, not projecting well at all.
All in all, not as professional a production as I expected considering the price of admission and the supposed prestige of a professional opera company.
Considering the price of the tickets I expected a more professional production. Also

I love opera and this opera was such a joy and uplifting. The men's chorus started out low but built up and was great. The women's chorus was articulate and full. I plan to buy season tickets for 2011-2012. Keep up the good work!
The only criticism I have is that I sat in the first row at 110.00 for my seat, and was constantly bothered by the high railing. Obviously, whoever designed the height never sat in these seats.

Enjoyable performance and beautiful singing voices. Great experience. The one negative was the uncomfortabe temperature (too warm) in the mezzinine section. I'm looking forward to the next opera coming in September.

This was my first opera and I must say that I am looking forward to the next one. Cherubino was a male part but I fell in love with Jossie Perez performance. She was just spectacular. The whole play was great and not understanding much Italian myself, the subtitles above the stage helped greatly to follow along.

If you missed this opera, you missed and thouroughly entertaining and superb performance from a superb cast. The venue is beautiful as well as the area it is in. I recommend you attend any performance there.

In overall I think the opera was Ok and I had a enjoyable night. Here, some thoughts about the performance:
Pros:
- Good scenarios

My opera experience is very limited, but I felt the actual performance was well done. I had one major complaint. Translation was presented on a screen over the stage, which would have been a nice feature if it had been done correctly. But the person advancing the lines was incompetent. Sometimes, he was behind by several minutes, and then would suddenly catch up by flying through several lines in seconds. Other times, he would get ahead and then skip back. This made the feature a negative distraction. I don't speak Italian, but would have enjoyed the show more without incompetently presented translation. Also, the translation had several easily noticeable typos, and sometimes didn't fit on the projection screen. As far as I'm concerned, testing the equipment, proof-reading the text, and practicing the cues and timing relative to the show should be just as important to the person responsible for that activity as preparing for the performance should be for the on-stage performance.
