After seeing Dinosaur Jr last night the streets were much quieter. Dinosaur Jr still seem to have a magic even with the distance since their inception growing. Opening the set were tracks primarily from the new era of Beyond and Farm. These tracks were good but seemed to be missing some sort of intensity and watching J Mascis sip on a cola and look as though he could be anywhere else, in between the wailing guitar play, did not help me wonder if engagement was truly possible at this show, then, a shift occurred. At the announcement of Barlow, more tracks from the Bug and You're Living All Over Me started to occur and it became obvious what this band was about, the loud, engaging solos from Mascis and the thudding rhythm of Barlow and Murph without the smoothness of the new album tracks. The new tracks when listened to at home are great, but the older tracks seem to be more agreeable in the live setting. It is clear that Mascis has settled back into the realm of studio albums, playing amazing solos, and plain looking tired, (this was one of the last shows of this tour admittedly) but that doesn't mean the band didn't still put on a good display of their music, new and old, that anyone who has a liking for Dinosaur Jr, as well as anyone who enjoys listening to gratifying guitar solos, heavy bass, and solid drum work, should see.
