Intelligence is Wicked

When clever, intelligent writing meets over-the-top production, and is then set to a strong, dramatic score, the result is Wicked, and the result is the greatest theater experience I've ever experienced. I was familiar with the score before coming to see Wicked, and this allowed me to see how it fit with the play. Combined with a broad comedy flare in the directing of Galinda and Elphaba, the play uses clever word play and subtle alusions to the Wi1zard of Oz in the telling of Elphaba's biography. The writing allows for Galinda to change the way a protagonist is supposed to change, even though it is Elphaba's story. Also of note were the origins of the scarecrow, the tin man, and the lion. Only Dorothy, so heroinistic (made it up) in her movie, is glossed over with clever references here and there. Elphaba is a fully fleshed-out character, rare in a musical, who you come quickly to admire and then root for. She is an intellect who truly cares and trusts. The term Wicked" becomes almost a virtue in the writing of her character. She is matched with a power house score that demands a vocal power equal to her ambition and ascent. I wish to thank the Wizard of Oz for embedding in our national consciousness the story and the music and the characters. Wicked comes off even more brilliantly because the audience already knows the story. It is fun to see the writing prompt the audience to think. Wicked is intelligence; intelligence is Wicked. You CAN improve on a classic.

An interesting spin on a classic tale ("The Wizard of Oz"). The acting was very good, especially that of Glinda (or "Gah - linda"). All of the musical numbers were powerful, but at times would drown out the dialogue, so it was difficult to know what they were saying. And unlike many musicals, there was really only one memorable song that you would recognize again ("Defying Gravity").

But the highlight was reconciling the story of "Wicked" with "The Wizard of Oz". A lot of funny moments, and it was a great way to put a fresh spin on an old story.

The Broadway production of Wicked on Sunday was outstanding. I've been to numerous Broadway productions and they are always really good but actually seeing a Broadway play, on Broadway, took it up a notch! The artistry of each scene was fantastic. In any big production you expect to see at least one or two minor glitches but I have to say I thought everything was perfect. From the stage drops, to the dancing and singing, just absolutely superb.

If I have to point one thing out that I was surprised about, it would be the lighting. Typically the lighting is important and it can really help 'sell' a scene, but for this show it was invaluable. So many scenes were made even better by the inventive backdrops that had projeced or lighted shadows the helps make a scene. It really was imaginative and so well done.

In case you haven't realized by now, I thought the show, in all parts, was flawless and that says a lot because I am honest when leaving reviews. I just saw no issues with anything. The cast, their performances, the imagery brought out with the sets and lighting, all just what you'd expect from a show of Wicked's caliber.

I surprised my wife with a trip to broadway to see WICKED for our anniversary and we both loved the show. The props and stage sets were intricately detailed and completed with high quality. The sound was clear and we could hear every detail of what was happening on the stage. The acting and singing were impecable! The story line was unique and different and would recommend anyone to see if they get a chance!

Both my daughter and I celebrate birthdays in February, this year was the first time in ten years we opted not to go somewhere warm and exotic. We decided instead to go to New York to see Wicked. Despite hearing rave reviews I was completely unprepared to be blown away by the performance. My daughter is 10; we have been to countless shows ( including all the Disney broadway productions, Cats, Billy Ellliot and Shrek to name a few) she has proclaimed this her favorite. A must see for all ages!

Wicked is really wonderful. We brought our three teens and even our 13-year-old sports enthusiast son said, "This was GREAT! I had the BEST day!" We had some people seated behind us with very young children, maybe about 5 years old, who were squealing in delight before the lights went down, saying they couldn't wait for the "movie" to begin. I was glad we waited to bring our kids to Broadway when they were old enough to appreciate that a live theatrical performance is NOT a movie. They also were old enough to appreciate the mature message of what is good/what is wicked, which is what the show is about.

It was the highlight of my trip to New York City. I loved Jackie Burns as Elphaba. What a voice! My 11 year old daughter and 76 year old mother also loved it. It was a beautiful story and wonderful enjoyment for all ages!

In October 2009, I planned a girls weekend in NY with my mother, sister and daughter. The highlight of our trip was to see the play "Wicked". The plays was a wonderful twist on the "Wizard of Oz". The acting and musical arrangements were excellent and the story line was surprisingly humorous. I left the show rooting for the "Wicked Witch of the West". I guess even the green evil people have their own story if we'd just slow down to listen. Anyway, we enjoyed the show and would highly recommend it to friends and family.

We were told by everyone that this show was amazing. It was, in fact. Not really knowing much about the story line when we went to see it, I was thrilled by the creativity of the author in taking a well known tale and recreating it from a completely unique vantage point. The singing was fantastic, acting and sets equally so. We had nosebleed seats, but had no problem seeing or hearing, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the show! Well done!!

This was the most amazing performance I've seen in NYC. Everything from the singing, production, set, and acting was high class. The actors kept us laughing the entire show and brought us to tears at the end of the show. I would see this show a million more times if given the opportunity!

Everyone who said this was a great show to see was absolutely right! My husband and I completely enjoyed this cleverly written prequel to the Wizard of Oz. I'm still processing all of the insight and innuendo contained in the storyline and how everything fit together. It gave you a lot to think about if you wanted to, but presented in a package of humor, good fun and great music with a wonderfully talented cast. I don't get to Broadway shows very often, so I'm glad that this is the one I had the pleasure of seeing.

I absolutely LOVED Wicked!!! This was my very first Broadway show ever, and it has definitely set the bar. Wicked was amazing! I love everything about it. The actors are incredible and they sing so well it makes me want to learn to sing like them. I fell in love with Elphaba; she is amazing and her voice gave me goosebumps. She is such a strong singer and with perfect pitch! And Glinda was hilarious...I love her character too! If I ever watch Wicked again (and I certainly will), I would like these two actors to play Glinda and Elphaba again! I LOVE THEM! And the entire cast, crew, orchestra....awesome.

I was very hesitant to spend that much money on tickets but wow was it worth it. The show was amazing and even though I was sad I didn't get to see the original cast the two leads were phenomenal. Recommend this to everyone.
