Years ago, I had bemoaned the fact that I hadn't been able to catch Trivium on tour. It was just as well because at that point Trivium hadn't gotten entirely comfortable with their live shows. Matt hadn't taken voice lessons yet so during the singing passages he would struggle quite a bit. At Columbus this past Saturday (11-14-09), Trivium showed that they are in complete control of their sound.
Just to get the cliches out of the way, Trivium put on an amazing show wherein they showcased many great songs as well as their accomplished musicianship. What really made the show fun for me the band's confidence, in particular, Matt's. When one watches older live shows (on youtube or the special edition of "Ascendancy"), it always felt like Matt was just trying to see how many f-words he could squeeze into cliche metal frontman talk. It came off (at least to me) as unintentionally comical. At this show, Matt was clearly having a good time and interacted with the crowd on a fun and lighthearted note. He had no problem with self-deprecating humor nor with getting the crowd pumped up. One could just tell he was having a great time. As a result, the crowd got into the band a lot making for quite the fun concert experience. Also, Corey, Matt, and Paolo were clearly energized and moved around a lot on the stage.
As a side note, I had backstage passes so I got to meet the band afterwards. Granted, Travis was not there for whatever reason so they had his drum tech filling in for him (his name is Nick). All of them were quite down to earth and chatty. Matt in particular was fun to talk to.
All in all, it was an amazing show. The next time Trivium comes around, I will definitely go and see them.
