The Mountain Goats show last night at the Music Box at the Fonda was great. John Darnielle and company were in fine form. He always seems to be having such a good time, and he seems like such a Nice Guy. I love how it always looks like he is smiling and having a great time when he is singing. Smiles are contagious.
The show was heavy with songs from the new CD, and they sounded great. I really liked when he played his older stuff too, because I am more familiar with it - but it all worked!
I loved the fact that all the guys in the band were wearing jackets (and ties) - it was just a little touch of class. Funny, but true.
The Fonda did not open up the balcony, where there are actually seats, so that was not great, and I think the building in on a raised subfloor, because the bass lines were practically a full body massage. A little too much, but this was particularly true of the opening act, Final Fantasy. Owen Pallet is so talented! I don't think he needs to drown out the high notes with such a heavy base line.
