This was a touring company and my expectations weren't high, so I wasn't disappointed, The theatre was the first problem. Comerica Theatre is cramped and uncomfortable, with no orchestra pit. Orchestral accompaniment was all recorded. Canned music--Blech!
The supporting players constantly outshone the leads, neither of whose voices were up to their roles. Arthur was a decent actor, though he didn't have a strong enough stage presence. The Lady of the Lake was barely adequate and had very little stage presences. Pretty isn't enough, especially in this role. The actors playing Patsy, Dennis Galahad, and Sir Robin, were wonderful, especially Sir Robin. That boy will be a star.
But in the end, Eric Idle's play is so very great and funny, that my friend who hadn't seen it before was thrilled. We can't all have Tim Curry & Sara Ramirez.
