I was disappointed with the production and modern day twist to the story. It was bland. I bought these tickets originally because I thought I had seen somewhere the Royal Shakespeare Theater Group from London was performing. Having seen them perform Taming of the Shrew 15 years earlier in the same theater I was excited. I do love Shakespeare, but would pass on this show and adaptation.

Staging with Shakespearean language, but current day apparel and props was interesting.
Acoustics are terrible and even on the main floor in premium seats we could not hear a lot of the lines. Acting was fgor the most part very good.

Merchant of Venice was presented in a way that was captivating and interesting. Actors portrayed their characters flawlessly; I've seen this play many times; this is the first time I have truly understood the complete plot and interactions of characters.

I paid $95 /each for 2 first balcony seats. None of the players wore microphones, nor was the stage "miked". They could have been reading Dr Seuss for all I know- I couldn't hear a thing. The players are in modern dress yet still speak Elizabethan English- what's the point? It was, for me a very expensive waste of time.

This was superbly acted and directed all around. The actors were perfectly cast, and every line was thoughtfully played. F. Murray Abraham is a truly memorable Shylock.

Sorry to say, we left at the intermission. Our seats were in the rear of the theater and could hardly hear most of the men. The women's voices were stronger. The dialect was too fast to unterstand from that location. The scenery was non-existent. Others left with us. Maybe it was just less than we expected.

Just be warned it's a "modern" interpretation. And, that wasn't bad in itself, I just thought it was a bit overdone. And, they tried to play up "funny" lines, which ruined it a bit. Then, some of the actors shouted their lines in the hopes people would understand them better. A little frustrating.

This production set the play in modern garb, complete with cell phones and contemporary music, and it worked amazingly well. The acting was supurb, the staging interesting, but the voices could have been louder. My problem is that despite efforts to modernize the play, the antisemitism of this play could not be minimized, and left us extremely uncomfortable.

Outstanding production - up to date enough for adolescents and great acting for Shakespeare buffs...beautifully directed, great set.
Hard to hear toward back of hall - miking inadequate for back of first floor - missed words.

Having attended several Broadway productions, I was truly excited about the Merchant of Venice in Chicago. To say that I was exceptionally disapointed would be a gross understatement. My wife and I left the show at half time - had it not been for the location of our seats and the fact that we'd disturb other patrons, we'd have left earlier. What a waste of time and money. Whoever thought that setting such a great Shakespeare play in a "modern office" setting was a good idea should really not be allowed to produce Broadway shows.

I thought the production was excellent - I was with my husband, sister and son - high school age - and he said it was the most interesting Shakespeare production he had attended. Contemporary setting for the merchant role and cast worked very well - brought out all the shared human experiences that Shakespeare does so well.
It was a bit long - and a few elements seemed contrived in the modern-day approach, but overall really excellent.

The performance was dissappointing. First act is slow. It picks up a bit in the second act. A far cry from the movie version with Al Pacino as Shylock.

A unique opportunity to see a brilliantly done most difficult and unhappy of plays. Having avoided it for years, due to anti Semitic storyline and end, what is with the rings and who cares by then....but F. Murray Abraham pulled off a marvelous performance of a not-so-marvelous man. Though our USPS mailed tickets never made it us, Ticketmaster allows people to pick up tickets (with appropriate ID) at box office. Won't risk USPS again.
