Not only do the Decemberists know how to rock out, they also know how to make sure the audience is involved and having a good time. They always try to connect with the crowd by either having the audience join them on stage to sing, dance or play music. Truly, a wonderful group of people. I hope they always stay so down to earth.

They played the hazards of love all the way through and it was even better than listening to the album. Also, they did a cover of Heart's Crazy on You and it was fantastic. They were all so friendly to everyone in the audience.

I am a fan only of the Hazards of Love album - not the Decemberists' discography. I don't like happy music and I can't stand the modern hipster. However, I was in Borders one day and this really cool, jammy, dreamlike music was playing in the ceiling speakers. I asked the clerk who the artist was and without making eye contact, a finger pointed to a CD jewel case. Ah the utmost in customer service... Anyway, I picked up the CD that day and my ears are thanking me for it ever since.
There's no touching Pink Floyd. Let me state that simply and with fervor. David Gilmour and Roger Waters might as well be aliens from a planet with a greater understanding of music than we humans are capable of attaining. If those two had a mixed batch of bastard children with Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart who came together and made a concept album in the 21st century you could trace the sounds back to what is the Decemberists in another dimension. Concept albums seriously float my boat. If you don't get it, you simply don't get it. Plenty of jerks play the guitar/drums/bass/keys/etc well in the world over the last 40+ years. I do enjoy a solid arrangement or a melody that drives the listener to tears. But only a select few have managed to pull of the concept album successfully. It's an entirely different breed of animal and Pink Floyed are the reigning champion with the Wall. Who is second place, you ask? Well the Decemberists, of course, with The Hazards of Love.
So you can get an idea of my absolute giddy reaction to find that the entire album was to be played from start to finish... The sound guy even primed the audience by playing the B-side to Pink Floyd Echoes (Phantom, much?). I've said this before, but if you have a chance to see Hazards of Love live, go see it. I was honored to be a part of the audience for this one - the unveiling of the Visualizer. It's essentially a panoramic screen with digital video clips that somewhat go with the music. It reminded me a lot of seeing Tool live except that Tool has managed to perfect the video cues much better through repetition. I could have lived without the Visualizer - the music was overwhelming enough. Evening thinking of it now, almost a month after the show, I'm getting butterflies. It was so awesome to be a part of that show!
My wife was telling me about the two female guest singers and how she's attempted to find more tracks by Shara Worden where she sings like The Queen to no avail. That little pixy of a woman can seriously belt out some spot-on vocals! I'm so glad that she and Becky Stark were able to join the band for this show/tour. I think that they should just ditch their other projects and join the Decemberists fold full time.
After The Hazards of Love the group took a break and the Visualizer was pulled up off stage. At that time I told my wife that we could leave because everything after that moment would be a disappointment in comparison. There's no touching that first half of the night! With the exception of the cover of "Crazy on You" by Heart, I was right.
The second set was pretty much just happy songs that the hipster following could bounce up and down to and know that their sheltered little trust fund lives are going to be just fine. When many hipsters are happy and then happy becomes cool, do they just abandon happiness because they are constantly in search of anything that has yet to become a fad? Regardless of that whole deal, the first half of the show was worth at least twice what I paid for the tickets (don't quote me on that because tickets are already overpriced these days).
Royce Hall had fairly good sound and was intimate enough that we all had a decent view of the show. My wife and I were in the floor seats a few seats in front of the FOH engineer. Getting out of the parking lot after the show was a bummer because it took about 30 minutes. There's a terrible bottle-neck effect leaving the venue parking. Oh, and don't forget to pee IN Royce Hall before leaving the venue. The facility service people go around and lock up all surrounding restrooms and they frown on people who decide to pee on the floor in dissent of their practices. When you've got to go, you've got to go and damn it, I'm a patron of the arts!
In recap - venue is a solid 8/10. The band is a solid 8/10. The Visualizer is a fair 6/10 and needs more development and cue timing. The Hazards of Love album performed in full, in a live setting is an amazing 10/10 without question. Someone go tell Colin to wheel that sweet wagon back to LA very soon!

What I have heard from the amazing, Decemberists, is beyond beautiful. One might say that the lyrics are morose BUT the Band sings the songs as if it were an Opera. One great song blends right into the next terrific song. One could also say they are singing "ballads"! I say they are the very best of 2009. Their CD entitled, "The Hazards of Love" is the number 1 Album of 2009....no doubt what so ever....

Great show with a strong sense of drama throughout the two hours of music. The vocalists did a great job acting out their respective parts in the rock opera and the guest vocalists (two young ladies) were superb! Great storytelling and winsome commentary from Colin in the second set.

This is the 2nd time I've seen The Decemberists this year. Earlier in May at the Palladium to begin the Hazards of Love U.S. Tour, and then in October to end the U.S. tour and debut The Hazards of Love Visualized. To be honest, the animation was cool, but I was too busy watching the band to really care about what was on screen behind them. The use of obscure crazy awesome instruments is always fun to see. Colin makes me laugh. And the talent of the group is brilliant. You must see this band live.

The Decemberists have truly evolved. The first half of the show they performed The Hazards of Love in its entirety without stopping, accompanied by a large screen with visual stimulation. Colin later commented on how he wished that audience members would take psychedelics at their shows. Ha! The second half of the show was a "normal set," with songs from various albums. Great stuff!

This was one of the finest concerts I have been to in ages! Being the last night of the tour these guys and gals put on a fantastic performance filled with spontaneity and love for the craft as well as a great appreciation for the audience . Seeing the Hazards of Love in its entirety and performed with gusto against an animated backdrop made the evening one to remember. The animation was fun but did not overly distract from the band- the heart of the evening. Becky Stark and Sharon Worden brought their parts alive to an appreciative audience that loved every minute with these two incredible artists. The second set consisted of great renditions from previous (and unreleased as yet) Decemberist material. That's where the audience participation came in. A splendid time was had by all that night! I bought the tickets on a spur of the moment whim a couple weeks back not knowing what a thrill it would end up being!

I'm not a huge fan of their latest album, but hearing it performed live was excellent. It helped that the two vocalists they enlisted help from showed up (since I thought Shara Worden's contribution was the highlight of the album) but the whole band impressively played through the whole album with a lot of energy. Their second half and encores had old favorites and Maloy incorporated the crowd into their songs. All in all, it was a great performance and I have a new appreciation for the Hazards of Love.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself listening to The Decemberists play for what seemed like forever. I have been to many shows this year, but this one by far surpassed my expectations with he quality of the sound, the visualizations and the upbeat energy that permeated throughout the crowd. The part where the entire audience was involved with singing, brought chills through all my bones and made me smile from ear to ear. Hands down The Decemberists know how to put on a show and they do not disappoint!!!

Started with a great visualization of their newest album. In complete rock opera style they never stopped. After a short break they came out and played a bunch of fan favorites including some covers of other songs. Sound was too loud, video was very cool but not as closely tied to the subject matter in the lyrics as expected, jam in the middle of Chimblysweep devolved into insanity, but Colin is a top notch frontman and entertainer. Kept the audience interested and even convinced some people to dance and sing. The music and energy of the band were amazing. Liked the second half better (random set; first half was playthrough of Hazards of Love with video, which was great but that album's a little denser than the others). Encores were great too.

The show was phenomenal. The animation they played to accompany their "Hazards of Love" album made the whole thing come to life, and gave me a new perspective on the messages of their songs. And because it was the end of the tour, we got to see them all relaxing and having fun with the audience in a way I have never seen before. Oh, and Royce Hall is a fantastic venue. Easy parking, great acoustics, cool ambiance. I was a fan!
