SUMMERTIME is one of the most beautiful depictions of Venice ever filmed and was nominated for three Academy Awards – one for direction, one for best actress, and one for screenplay. Summertime (1955) remains a favorite for classic movie fans. Katharine Hepburn -- considered the world's number one screen legend -- portrays Jane Hudson, a middle-aged “special secretary” from Akron, Ohio who goes to Venice for a 3-week summer holiday. In the course of opening herself to Venice’s charms, she opens herself to the possibility of love and to life. Also starring Rossano Brazzi (later to star in South Pacific), and directed by famed British director David Lean (Bridge On the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago). Summertime was Lean's favorite film and Hepburn his favorite actress.
SUMMERTIME is also being shown as it should be seen -- on a big screen in a beautiful vintage movie palace -- and it is being shown during the 63rd Annual Italian-American Festival at Lock 3 (right next door) as part of a collaboration benefiting the Festival, the Civic, and Kent State University Museum, which is opening an original exhibit on Katharine Hepburn's personal collection of performance clothes on Oct 2, "Katharine Hepburn: Dressed for Stage and Screen."
