I saw the Furs last night at the art-deco inspired Gothic Theatre in Englewood, CO. The band is performing with great power, enthusiasm and joy these days. The show started with a bang as "Love My Way" tore up the theatre. Next came the fantastic song "Believe", which is from Richard Butler other band, Love Spit Love. With a megaphone enhancing the songs timbre, we were treated to a rare performance as this song has never been performed by the Furs before.
The band followed in short procession with "Heartbeat", the endearing "The Ghost In You", and then into the haunting "Like a Stranger". With this choice, the group was starting to dig back into their classic repertoire and the magic was starting to grow!
I am a professional lead guitarist, and to see these guys pull it out so effortlessly was a treat! New guitarist Rich Good was solid and able to deliver the signature leads that John Ashton wrote. Additionally, Rich was able to include his own style adding to the textures and layers of sonic adventure that the Furs are known for.
The most exciting solos of the evening belonged to Mars Williams, an extraordinary jazz saxophonist who also plays in the fantastic Chicago-based Liquid Soul band. Mars' also played with the Furs back in 1984 when I saw them at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles for the Mirror Moves tour. This man is so accomplished with his phrasing, melodies, counterpoint and sonic magic that it gave the Psychedelic Furs the feel of their original sound back in 1977-1981.
The rhythm section of Paul Garisto, (drums), and Tim Butler, (bass), was as rock-solid as anything in rock music. Paul also played with the Furs back in 1984 and it is such a pleasure to see him manning the drum seat again! Tim is one of rock's finest bassists, on a par with Adam Clayton of U2 or Tina Weymouth of the Talking Heads. His sound is fat and so deeply in-the-pocket with Paul's kick drum that you almost wonder is he playing. He is!!
Amanda Kramer is the keyboardist and her textures and sweet arpeggio'd chords and lines fill up the sonic palette that the Furs so definitely rely on. She is also such a beautiful woman, and it is nice to see women working in music such as this situation.
Richard Butler's charisma, charm, personal style and heart make him the penultimate front man! He knows how to work a crowd to the tee, and his vocals have become such a signature part of the Furs that without his voice, the band wouldn't be the same.
Richard has had his share of pain and disappointment in his life, and he has learned how to translate that angst into his words and music. He does the same with his paintings too! Yes, Richard is a multi-talented creative force and his paintings also are something to behold. Check them out by Googling Richard Butler's paintings/gallery exhibits.
