Devo at the Vic 11/13

Favorite moment: Meet and greet after the show. Thanks for haning out with us Mark, Bob 1, Bob 2, Gerry, and Josh. @
Setlist: See inside sleeve of The New Traditionalists, add two videos in the beginning and an extended play version of Beautiful World at the end. That about covers it. @
Opening act(s): Not a Terrible act, just a terrible choice for a Devo show. @

Devo was dead nuts on in their performance of The New Traditionalists in it's entirety. Instrumentally and vocally they still have it just as well as they did back in the beginning. I saw Devo in their heyday back in the early 80's, I can say with certainty that they are as good now as they were then. Lights and sound were perfect for the venue as well.
The veteran members executed their guitar, vocal, and synth parts precisely, but it should be noted that the new drummer, Josh, has his licks down pat. He has learned the material well, and executed the songs flawlessly. He has a certain fluid playing syle that allows him to trade off his dominant arm from right to left and back again which suits this style of music well. He sounded like he had been playing with Devo for years. Energy domes off to him for really filling the hole.
As I see it there were only two problems with the show. One being the opening act. The crowd at the Vic was indeed very rude to him, although there were moments when his talent was recognized by a few. It was always recognized by me, however, he just wasn't the right choice to open a Devo show. It would more apporopriate for him to open a Heywood Banks or a Weird Al show. The other problem was the length of the Devo set. A lot of us would have liked to see them play just a little longer. However if we must trade quality for quantity, we certainly did so and still got a great show for the money. I and many others would do it again this friday if we could.
Overall a great show. For those of you who are saying to yourselves "I should have gone" you are indeed correct.

Musically, Devo was on the spot. However, the show was WAY too short and the opener was ridiculous. It took them about 40 minutes to play through the album and then they left the stage. They then came back and played two more songs, the last of which Alan came out as some goofy alter-ego and messed the whole song up.
While I respect that they played their album in complete, they should have at least added a second set that included their other hit songs so that people left feeling satisfied that they heard what they wanted to hear. Instead, we got to hear three hits and a bunch of crap.
In total, they were on stage less than an hour. I'd lean towards saying that due to their age, they can't handle putting on a show of a decent length, but the Stones and other bands manage to do it so why can't Devo?

Devo was just as great as when I saw them in 1981 in Detrot! Also, the meet and greet was fantastiac--the individual members took time to talk to their fans and sign albums, hats, CDs, etc. They are great performers and also great individuals.
However, the opening "comedy act" was the worst performance on a live stage that I have ever seen in going to concerts, plays, etc. in the last 40 years!
Thank God Devo's performance more than made up for it.

First night rocked everyone's socks off! Second show was good but their material after the second album just doesn't hold a candle to their first two lp's. Maybe it was Eno's influence. Although they pulled out a surprise 2nd night and played a Be Stiff!!
They should have played an an encore or even a second set considering it was Friday night and Friday the 13th at that. Both shows were short in length. They should have played a bunch of songs from Duty Now! Especailly as the Future is Here! Love the band but they should have stayed and rocked the band!

Favorite moment: Ton 'o Love was a very unforgettable performance!! Also the Video lead-up of the old video's was very tastefull and reminiscent. @
Setlist: Very good, but could have been longer. They simply have so many good songs, that the show should have been another 1/2 hour longer. @
Opening act(s): They should not continue to let him open for them. The crowd boo'ed him off of the stage because he was so poor. If it was meant as a joke for the audience, the audience didn't get it. It was almost upsetting. It seriously meant that Devo had to work harder to salvage an already sinking show. @

The band was awesome as well practiced as they are. They are flawless in performance. I wish that their show was longer though. Kinda seemed a bit short compared to what other bands do. We also bought VIP tickets to meet the band, but they sold so many VIP tickets that it almost wasn't worth it. You can't get in more than a "Hi" with all of the other people there. The band was very kind though and took time for as many autographs as they could. The show was great though.

Devo a susual were really on top of their game, however the opening act (JP Inc) was a quirky start, but I would have enjoyed JP more if there was a ligitimate following opening act, even if it was a local band. Devo has always been about the cash, but 50 bucks should have bought us more.

I'm not sure that its worth it to show up early to get a good spot because then you have to sit through the opening act which was possibly the singularly most awful entertainment experience ever: JP, Incorporated. Some dude singing, horribly badly, fake TV theme show music. Sounds bad. It was. Avoid. Then there was about 30-45 minutes of sundry roadies coming out on stage adjusting things, followed by three vintage Devo videos. Girl U want, Whip It and, uh, I forget the other one. Then the band came on and played through the entire Freedom of Choice album. It Rocked, excellent! Total time about an hour. This was followed up by a two song encore of Planet Earth and Beautiful World. Mark's Boogie Boy character was a bit flat and the audience was pretty disengaged during Beautiful World because of that. Then it was lights on, time to go. The show, with the exception of the boogie Boy portion of Beautiful World, was fantastic. Could have been about 30-45 minutes longer. Don't feel riped off but I was expecting more.

I know this band gets alot of bad raps because they wear odd costumes and not to many people take them seriously, but let me tell you this...... Devo can Jam with the best of them!!!!! Devo played their album "Freedom of Choice" in total, exposing some very deep album cuts on stage. I enjoyed the high energy of these songs in concert, and will eventually have me buying their entire catalog. "Girl U Want," "Whip It," and the title track "Freedom of Choice" were the highlights. Their shameless satire of current and recent American life are too delicious to consider them "over the hill." This show was a 2X4 whack upside the head to all the politically correct garbage we have to endure today. The opening act of a comedian singing title songs to TV shows of a 70s era with a video backdrop put the crowd in the proper attittude. Witness a commercial for a heavy metal band called "Crap Factory," and there's no questioning where Devo thinks the rest of the music world is at.
The only disappointment was the length of the show, about 1 hour. After "Freedom of Choice," they performed only one encore song, "It's a Beautiful World," complete with Boojie Boy. They could have easily gone another 30 minutes with the amount of great material they have. There can be no explanation for this, except their anger at the music industry. But why take it out on the fans?

Once the actual DEVO portion of the show began, it was amazing. One of the best shows I've ever seen - such great energy, talent, creativity and just FUN.
The opening act (which surprisingly was someone who is on tour with DEVO - can't believe they would put them stamp of approval on an act that lame!) JP Incorporated was a comic singing along with bad, bad commercials/video he had created. The crowd booed endlessly. A painful 20-30 minutes, to say the least.
Then there was a loooooong wait between the end of JP and the beginning of DEVO, which started off with videos of the exact songs we were going to hear. Cool, cool, videos took us back at least 25 years and had everyone singing. One question: why would they play the videos of the exact songs they're about to sing? Whatever, they were cool.
Very thankful that DEVO brought us this show!!!
