If Neil Young and Lucinda Williams had a kid, it would be Kathleen Edwards. Of course, the kid would have to develop the edginess that can only come with touring in a Chevy Suburban for a year. There's absolutely no pretentiousness in her music or her show. Every song is a story, and not all of them are happy ones. But they're all masterfully told, and Edwards holds nothing back in the telling. She throws straight from the shoulder, and it's a knockout every time. She's fierce, but not at the expense of being closed off -- something that was enhanced by seeing her in a small venue. She engages with the audience, makes them part of the performance, and doesn't insult their intelligence.
There's an honesty in Edwards' music and in her performance that if you don't love it, you may be intimidated by it. But you won't fail to respect it.
Even if she is a Leafs fan. ;-)
