The first two acts were a tad bit daft and melancholy, however, as soon as Jukebox the Ghost came on the energy I was expecting from a MCS headline jolted into Irving Plaza. I had briefly listened to a few of their singles off of Spotify prior to the show, and was impressed by the Ben Foldsesque composition and enthusiastic poppy sound. When it came time I was even more blown away by their charisma, stage presence and "cool hair" (a joke made by the previous band).
I've been listening to the rest of their discography since I walked into my office this morning.
As usual, MCS had a great set. Back in 2003, my friend had suggested I listen to them. Now in 2012, I've seen them on each of their tours and have yet to be disappointed. It was also pure nostalgia to see that Justin, year after year, still styles his hair the same way. I would have liked to hear a bit more from "I Am the Movie", but I did get my flashbacks from Warped Tour by the few "Commit This To Memory" songs.
Going back to the opening band and Now, Now, I thought that they weren't musically cohesive with Jukebox and MCS. They would have been more appropriately booked for a Counting Crows-like audience. I had to go outside twice, burning through nicotine sticks to maintain a chipper demeanor! They also lacked stage presence and social composure, but it was most likely out of nervousness - hopefully Now, Now cleans up or gains a bit more confidence for Fallon tonight!
