Let me begin by stating that I am an NC State graduate (Class of 1986). Needless to say Jimmy V holds a special part of my heart. In the Spring of my freshman year the team led by Jim Valvano went on a pretty special ride in the NCAA Tournament as I am sure most all reading this may be aware culminating in a very improbable National Championship. I live in New York now and every year I make a point to attend the Jimmy V Classic at MSG since its inception many years ago. The last couple of years the attendance figures at the games (doubleheader) have gotten ridiculously smaller and smaller, to the point this year of it being pretty disgraceful. I am not sure who is in charge of scheduling the participants in this tournament, but whoever it is they need to take notice if they haven't already done so!!! This year the four schools were University of Missouri, Villanova, University of Washington, and Marquette. On the surface, all four of these programs are decent basketball programs. With two Big East schools involved, Villanova and Marquette, I would have thought they would have a decent fan base at the game. Apparently, I was wrong! The Garden was empty! They need to bring some teams back to this tournament that will fill the arena! Attendence was a joke for this tournament recognizing Jimmy V and a very worthy charity, the V Foundation.
