What an incredible show! These guys are working hard. Two hours and 45 minutes of all your favorite Tubes hits and them some. Roger Steen is in fine form on guitar, (even though be actually missed my favorite funky middle eight lick in "Boy Crazy", but after two hours on stage, I'd be tired too,). Prairie Prince still tight on the drums and hitting all the tempo changes with deadly accuracy. Rick Anderson's bass is rock steady - and funky as hell during an extended 15-minute medley of James Brown tunes. Vince Welnick and Mike Cotten are not longer with the band so the keyboard spot was manned by David Medd, who did a fine job filling in two pairs of shoes, though I must say that the original analog synth programming that Mike Cotten brought to the band really cannot be touched with a pair of factory fresh digital keyboards. Fee Waybill is still in great voice, although, being that this was only the Tubes second time out this year, there were a few high notes that were a tad flat, which I have to attribute to the mix, which was way too low end/ high end with lots of the middle frequencies gone. Kick drums were cannons and synths and guitars often thin and brittle. Up near the stage the sound was better. I bet Fee had a hard time hearing. Hopefully, as the tour matures, the technical details will iron themselves out. The costume changes are all there, including Quay Lewd, albeit not with the towering fake amplifier stack and the "Q" guitar of days past. The show was absolutely awesome, esp. if you're a Tubes fan from the '70's, even though the elaborate stagecraft (and the lovely Re Styles) are now a thing of the past. But then again, what do you want from life?
