The first ballet I ever saw was "Gaite Parisienne," and now I seem to have come full circle: Offenbach music (but lots of other well-chosen pieces by Ibert, Shostakovich, Strauss Jr, ...), love story, can-can, etc. This production is remarkable in the way that it blends classical steps with cabaret, and avoids the obvious trap of campy-kitschy wink-wink naughtiness, not that there isn't a little of that. The choreography points up the music with great finesse. I was really afraid that a moonlight pas de deux to "Clair de Lune" would be over the top, but the dancers sold it. Sets, wardrobe, lead dancers, all first rate. After seeing it once, I went back & saw it again, liking it even more the second time. My only criticism is that the death scene is a little drawn out. (But nothing like the awful insect-like spasms of Tybalt's death in MacMillan's R&J.)
