Featured Review

Priarie Home Companion was funny, entertaining, and full of great music and singing. Garrison Keillor was a great entertainer and even sang to us during intermissions; he obviously loves his work. The setting at Riverbend Music Center was great, outside yet under a roof, a pleasant warm evening, along the Ohio river. We had a great time!

Garrison Keillor is just so darn funny! And it's amazing to see the stage management to produce both the stage show and the radio broadcast. A must see for Norwegian Lutherans and fabulous for the rest of you!!

As always, I'm a fan of powdermilk biscuits and Keillor's magic. His monologue was superb, mixing Shakespeare's sonnet with the usual kindly swipes at midwesterners. The Iowa waltz gone Cajun was magical. Glad he did not retire, as he threatened to do.

I took 2 sets of opera glasses for us and I am glad I did. The performers enjoyed each other as much as we enjoyed them. I could see that by their facial expressions via the glasses and the movements in the dark in the back of the stage from our middle of the Center's seating. It is too bad we were packed in with little foot room to dance with the Cajuns. Some moved like cats to get their props set up while the featured artists were entertaining. So much going on at once and yet so mellow and yet so invigorating. Then they were great talents to boot. We querried on the way home, "What will those musicians all do after a gig on Sat night, being done at 7p.m.?" Go to Blues on Grand?

My huband surprised me with the tickets, which he said were best available and though the seats were picked over. What a wonderful view! I know some people are hesitant to be so far from the aisle, but honestly, I saw EVERYTHING.

My husband and I attended the "Prairie Home Companion" show at the Civic Center on Saturday. The jokes, music, skits and so on were all terrific! We loved the music especially!

I enjoy listening to the Prairie Home Companion radio show each week, or most every week. It is AMAZING to see live! This was my first time, and I really enjoyed it!

A two hour live broadcast! How many shows like this exist today?

I always enjoy the part of the show known as "The News From Lake Wobegon", and it didn't disappoint. But to see the sound effects wizards in action throughout the entire show was most excellent!

The best part was that there was a whole 15 minute prelude with music, and jokes before the live recording even started. This show is a must see if you enjoy music and stories and you have an imagination

Garrison Keillor and his PHC cast are a national treasure. Saturday's broadcast is the 2nd live broadcast I've been to. This might have even topped the 1st. The guest stars were outstanding. Garrison's skits, monologue and singing were true to form. I hope he never retires.

I have been a fan of Prairie Home Companion since 1976 and have seen many shows since that time. This show was one of the best. I especially appreciated the talent of Roseanne Cash. Her music was amazing. It was so special hearing her sing those songs from her latest CD 'The List" and what a great honor to her father and the artists on the CD to do these songs. Johnny Cash really had a terrific idea in mind when he gave her this list. Great show all around.

My husband came home from work one night and told me we had to get tickets to the show. I had heard of it but had never seen or listened to a show. Honestly I didn't know what to expect. I had an amazing time and was in awe of all the work that goes in to doing a live production. I look forward to listening to future broadcasts on NPR radio. I will have a greater appretiation for the show now knowing what goes on beind the broadcast. The music was superb and I loved how they tied the songs into Des Moines and Iowa. I laughed so hard I am surprised my belly didn't hurt this morning! Job well done!

We really enjoyed the entire thing! The time passed really fast.. We listen to Prairie Home Companion nearly every weekend and it was fun to put faces with the voices we hear weekly. It was also fun to see how the sound effects are done on the show.

Before the show starts Garrison comes out and talks with the audience and makes you feel like he knows your area and enjoys being there. At 4pm, they were still doing final writing for the show that started in an hour - they want to make the performance as strong and updated as possible. I was amazed that Lake Wobegon was all done with no notes - he walked and talked and just brought it all together. I had waited over 15 years to see a live performance and hope they will return to Iowa for a future show.

I listen frequently to Prairie Home Companion on the radio so was primed to enjoy it live in person. The best part was seeing how the sound effects are done. I also enjoyed watching how the cast interacts with each other during the show to keep it running smoothly. The monologue was good but not the best Garrison has done. I appreciated when Garrison came out before the radio show started to warm up the audience.
