Oakland's version of the nutcracker was a joy to watch. The costumes and dancing was very good, The venue (Paramount) was good because it seemed any seat was close to the stage. I was particularly surprised by the orchestra and choir ensemble..very nice.

The performance was wonderful! It had great choreography - I especially like the variety besides the basic ballet partnering moves - and showed the lovely lines of the dancers. The introduction of the mice earlier in the show was an excellent idea - it gripped my 6 year old son and 2 year old daughter's attention right away. In other Nutcracker performances, my kids' favorite part involved the mouse king and it normally lasted all of about 2 minutes. This extended mouse exposure kept my kids enthralled all the way till intermission. The fabulous costumes with the snowballs, the candies, the mice, and the nutcracker PLUS the bonus of live music kept even my 6 year old enjoying the entire show(my 2 year old fell asleep at intermission - par for the course). Special kudos to the choreographer who was able to shepherd the kiddies onstage during the show without looking like he was trying to herd cats.

This was the best Nutcracker I've seen yet, and I've seen many. It was also beautifully affordable.

I've seen the Nutcracker at a few different venues. This was a lovely version - modernized just a touch. I did miss a couple of the traditional things, but it was very enjoyable.

I know, bah-hum-bug. I hate to do it, but here's my quick review:
The Paramount is an incredible retro theater. The Nutcracker performance by the Oakland Ballet was just so-so. The principal ballerina gave the most solid performance...the rest seemed quite amateurish. A lot of wobbly spins and jumps. The music could've been a bit louder--not sure how the acoustics are limited in this theater. Nonetheless, I gave it three stars because it did entertain and the sets were well done. The snack bar was also reasonably priced. Overall, no matter what the show, I say go to the Paramount just to see the theater.

**Note: We had wanted to see the SF Ballet Nutcracker but the tickets were ridiculously priced. So this definitely offered an affordable alternative to take my 3-year-old daughter.

The show was great, classic. The Mayor opened the show, declaring it Nutcracker Day in Oakland. The only negative was the long lines for the restroom, as usual!

Different version -- trying too hard. My family and I didn't feel that this performance delivered the spirit of the story and the music. Our children (11 and 9) wondered if we went to the "wrong place." The stage and wardrobe colors were dull and somber, the music lacked ooompphhh, the stage seemed like a bad dream of candy-land and not all dancers belonged in the major leagues. As far as the music goes, the percussion and the strings were off-tempo at times, and the dancers landed/finished their routines at off-beats. The percussion section of the ballet orchestra is the largest and plays a big role in maintaining the rhythm of the music and dancers -- the child's rattle did not evoke the playful emotions that it should. We were disappointed, and will most likely go back to the SF Ballet @ War Memorial (as we have the last 7 years) to continue this family tradition. We gave it a shot - we wanted to try something different, and we discovered that we like a more classical interpretation and direction of this beautiful piece. Kudos for brining The Nutcracker to Oakland. I am sure that the price/value will attract early adaptors and one-time ballet goers, but will likely disappoint seasoned ballet goes. Delightful. Beautifully danced throughout. Lighthearted first act actually kept me awake. No more dreary Victorian era stuffiness. Kids playing, parents enjoying and chasing, having their own fun as well. With many nods to tradition, Graham Lustig has brought Nutcracker forward with something for everyone. His sprightly and fresh choreography is often challenging but the dancers were up to it. Charming bits for many, many children who were perfectly rehearsed yet looked to be having a good time. How wonderful to have the live music. It went by so fast, I couldn't believe when the joyous finale began. I thought I'd seen enough Nutcrackers to last the rest of my life, but I'd go back to see this one. Take the whole family.
