The game itself was decent, not great. But the Sport and the event itself? It deserves 5 stars.
It gives the city some much-needed culture...and/or weirdness. This is why I think it's important (I'm gonna use another city as reference, watch out): as techies, investors, and other white collar companies started moving their offices to Austin in the 90s, the city's residents worried that the city was losing some of its character "weirdness," the very same warm, welcoming funkiness that drew young talent to the city. So it started the "Keep Austin Weird" movement, supporting quirky community initiatives (including quirky festivals and events) in the city.
Add a more physical tackles and rollerskates to the scenario, and that sort of misfit culture is exactly what Roller Derby is cultivating. It may not be time to "keep" DC weird, but it is certainly time to try to "include" a little weird into the city.
