I heard somewhere that the western tour of this production was the "B" team, and after seeing it, that assessment is believable. The Russian dancers looked uninspired and generally lacking in energy. They were often out of sync, and sloppy with their footwork.
The highlight was seeing the local girls and boys that filled out the cast. You could tell that they were really honored to be there, and were really doing their best.
The sets were almost non-existent, just a few varying backdrops. The story was not told as well as other productions I've seen, Ballet Etudes being one. You could get a better story and better performance by buying the blu-ray of the San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker.
The variations were unimpressive.
It was a fairly short production, which was fine. By the end, you felt satisfied that you had seen all they had.
Comerica Theater is drab and dumpy. The restrooms are poorly maintained.
I give it a recommend:Yes because I think it is worth seeing once. It is short enough, and seeing the local dancers on a big stage is a bit of a treat. Buy the cheap seats, and come with realistic expectations.
Or for a better show, go to the Spirit of Christmas at Chandler Center for the Arts instead. The production is far superior, it is more "Christmas-y" and it costs much less.
