Opera Atelier's production of The Magic Flute at the Southern Theater was a wonderful match. The sets seemed to extend into the theater - each enhancing the other - and the projection of the voices perfectly filing the hall. The production was lively - full of wonderful music by Mozart sung beautifully by the Opera Atelier soloists, Columbus Opera Chorus and supported by Columbus Symphony musicians. The spoken dialogue and libretto by Schikenader was sometimes comic and sometimes progressive - addressing women's equality, racial bias, love as peacemaker, and music as a magical healing power.

What a wonderful performance! We attended the Sunday matinee, and brought with us three family members who had never seen an opera before. They really enjoyed it (as we thought they might)!
Our guests particularly enjoyed the marvelous harmonies of "the three ladies".
Overall, the music was sublime, the performers exuberant, the costumes beautiful, and the sets were some of the best we have seen -- bravo!

The staging for The Magic Flute was amazing!! Although I am too cynical to not roll my eyes at the libretto -- I was awed at the way they brought everything to life onstage. That was truly magical.

Opera Atelier's Magic Flute is an extravagant production. The sets and costumes were colorful and the singing was excellent. Particularly notable was Laura Albino's impressive performance as Pamina.
What detracts from this production is the acting. They appear to have resorted to cornball antics to keep the audience engaged and when the really dramatic stuff happened it was rather ho-hum. Papageno's (Olivier LaQuerre) singing was very good, but he became a tiresome character by the end and no one was convinced he really wanted a Papagena.
The Magic Flute is a lot of work for the orchestra, and for the most part, they pulled it off well. They weren't always with the singers, which suggests that either the conducting was unclear or it was under-rehearsed. Or maybe both.
Before the performance, next season's repertoire was announced, with the good news that locally produced shows are returning.

We are season ticket holders of Broadway Grand Rapids, so we are used to better acting and elaborate sets. There is no question that the cast is exceptionally talented with regard to their voices and we were very impressed with music especially vocally. The sets were very minimal and the acting was mediocre. We did enjoy ourselves, but for the money spent I'd rather go to a Broadway style show.

The Magic Flute was a very enjoyable performance by Opera Grand Rapids. The singing was all amazing. The costumes were mostly great. The Hubble photographs, however, were disappointing. They were low-resolution and superimposed with other scenery pictures like palm trees and temples. They did not change or move often. And the seats we were sold in the Loge were absolutely pitiful - could not see the "advertised" screen AT ALL. Moved at intermission to better seats, had no choice - the Hubble pictures were a huge part of the reason we bought pictures for our astronomy-loving 12 year old (at full price, oops, found out it was 1/2 price student night) and she could not see the pictures at all.

This being our first opera we do not have any thing to compare it to,that being said it was very enjoyable and suprisingly funny! The music was beautiful.The opera company did a lot to help first time attendees feel comfortable. We will be attending many more operas in the future.
It was disturbing that several groups of people were seated after the preformance begain and some people behind us talked the entire time.

I have seen the Magic Flute at least five times. Aware that this performance was executed by students and a few professionals, my expectations were not high. But the quality of the singing, the orchestra (in spite of a hesitant beginning in the overture), and the the props were surprisingly outstanding. This was also the case of the acting were Papageno deserves special mention.

The Queen of the Night truly was magnificent, she hit those high F's with ease. All the voices were especially strong, including the students. The Student Taomina and Pamina were most impressive.

The University of Florida production of Mozart's Magic Flute at Phillips Performing Arts Center on April 7 was great. The singers, mostly students, did a fabulous job. Solos and ensemble pieces were done with a great deal of polish, and Maestro Chobaz had the orchestra in fine form. The high point of the evening -- literally -- was the famous Queen of the Night's aria "Der Hoelle Rache" with its challenging F6, masterfully sung by Hein Jung. (Some readers may remember the rendition in the film Amadeus.) The acting came across as very believable within the parameters of the plot, which is somewhat fantastical, and the humor was brought out superbly. The costumes and scenery were gorgeous and added immensely to the experience. The lyrics were sung in the original German, but the translation displayed unobtrusively on a screen over the stage enabled the audience to easily follow the action. The music? Maybe this isn't considered Mozart's finest opera (Don Giovanni is usually mentioned), but the music is wonderful. As of this writing there's one more performance, and if one hurries there's still a chance to catch it.
