Tenacious D's spent a lot of time on their recent album, Rize of the Fenix, voicing self-deprecating humor about The Pick of Destiny's commercial flop and the ensuing critical response.
If you are a fan of vulgar, well-written comedy rock, and want to see where the Flight of the Conchords & Steel Panther lineage began, go watch This is Spinal Tap, then buy a ticket to go see Tenacious D, because any insinuation that The D have lost a step are blasphemous in the extreme.
I swear Jack Black's been taking vocal lessons and honing his game. His melodies and singing are spot-on and full of vitality.
Kyle Gass is ever the virtuoso of the acoustic. However, and somewhat disappointingly, singing/harmonizing duties on several songs (not all) now fall to the bassist. As a first-time Tenacious D-concert attendee, I don't know if this has been the case or if this is a Rize of the Fenix tour development. KG's solos are impeccable, and his spoken humor does not disappoint.
Plenty of visual cues, a decent-length set, and a hilariously epic stage backdrop made for great eye candy. Tenacious D was bound to do no wrong with me, as I've had to miss every other previous concert for one reason or another. Therefore, this concert was 12 years in the making for me.
If you're a fan, go see these guys rock faces - you will not be sorry. It was absolutely worth every penny.
