Norm MacDonald has a nontraditional style of standup. His bits are long and he doesn't have them perfectly scripted. He deals with topics that many or most comedians deal with (e.g., death, disease, vegetarianism, sex), but his spin on them is different---he talks about them with much less bravado and more frankness, without stooping to self-deprecation (mostly) and ultimately, he's much funnier. There are a lot of short diversions from his main joke path, little instant observations, that he seems to make up on the spot. He's a really smart guy and an excellent comedian, and while I'd love to sit in a bar with him and shoot the breeze, I doubt he would be greatly appreciated by the Dane Cook frat-boy crowd. I would see his act again, on the same tour---it seems like each show would be pretty unique.
