Whenever I see him speak I imagine him as one of the Glass family genius' in a JD Salinger's books. Precocious as an adult. Just hipster enough but with the intention to bring the audience along on a little trip down the rabbit hole of humanity. His integrity carries him. This American Life has reinvented radio, bringing listeners back from the brink of over visualized stimulation. Through their skillful coaxing of storytelling, finally our internal inspiration can be used. And it builds connection between us....His final gesture of respect to the audience member (who turned out to be April Baer of OPB radio) during Q&A who didn't take the $100 bribe from the guy behind her, was rewarded with $101 from Ira. Running backstage to get his backpack and pulling out his wallet. delightful and just sweet.

Ira began the evening in the dark, offering the audience just the sound of his wonderful voice. Funny, creative and interesting-- that is what I think about when listening to Ira Glass.

I would only recommend seeing Ira Glass if you are a consistent listener to This American Life. Although Ira is a talented radio host, unfortunately, he is a bad public speaker. His vocalized pauses along with his lack of transitions from subject to subject makes you wish he would join a Toastmasters group. It is my belief that only people who are true fans of his show (which I am) will be able to sit and listen to what he has to say. I only give this event four stars because I am a fan, and truly admire his work.

Ira Glass started off swimming in a sea of pretentiousness phrasing how great TAL is by speaking in a negative tone about mainstream news. He then found it ridiculous that Unitarians don't believe in God and pray to their inner selves. Then making himself also ignorant and egotistical. He later redeemed himself speaking about the passing of his friend, David Rakoff. But ended the night with a bad taste in mouth giving $100 to a OPB employee, which I found to be patronizing.

As a loyal fan of TAL, I was so excited to hear Ira live. He didn't disappoint. His narrative about the show and their approach was fun, informative, interesting, and more. The time just flew by.
He demonstrated that he is a class act. During the Q&A session, he answered several questions beyond the host giving him the "hook" to catch his flight at 11pm. After the show we waited for him outside the stage door, near his waiting towncar. Even though his was terribly late for the airport, he still stopped to meet us, take pictures, shake hands, and sign autographs. He's the real deal.

Turns out Ira Glass is a sassy, compassionate, intellectual who doesn't suffer fools. And listening to him wax poetical about his career and beliefs about narrative for TWO HOURS was insanely fascinating. I would pay to hear him read the dictionary.

Ira was funny, self-deprecating, warm, insightful, sharp, and overall a total pleasure to see. At the very end, a guy tried to bribe the woman in front of him $100 to get to ask a question of Ira. She was to be the last questioner-- she mentioned this, and Ira went and got his wallet and gave her $101. He applauded her for not being bought out. She happened to work for OPB, and Ira turned the moment into a metaphor for integrity in public radio journalism.

Ira Glass proved himself to be as amazing in person as he is on the radio. He embodies generosity of spirit, at the same time intelligent, funny, sentimental, edgy and sincere. His presentation was beyond amazing--thank you Literary Arts for bringing Ira Glass to the Portland community!

The show was as entertaining or more than a regular episode of 'This American Life'. Ira is as witty and eloquent in person as he is on the radio. His goal is to entertain the audience with everyday life and he achieves that flawlessly. Even the Q&A session after the show was enjoyable.

Can the days of yesteryear, when our grandparents sat spellbound listening to stories on the radio, ever be experienced again? YES! Thanks to Ira Glass and his talent for story telling, an audience full of mostly young people was spellbound at the Schnitzer! We had the highest expectations for an entertaining evening, yet Ira exceeded those expectations by leaps and bounds. We are so grateful for his shows and what he has brought to Public Radio (and now the movies, as Sleepwalk with Me was terrific)! Highly recommend!!

I still don't know how he did it, but the talk was just like his radio show. From his iPad, he mixed in interviews and music so seamlessly that you almost couldn't believe it was live.
Plus the content was thoughtful and very practical, such has how to structure an interview so that it keeps the narrative going.

Ira Glass did an awesome job of explaining life as a journalist. He also did a great review of NPR (which I listen to daily - so, good to know it is a good company!). He was witty, yet covered his topics well. We all enjoyed it very much.
