As always- the lush sound of the whole orchestra makes the entire concert so enjoyable- the strict rhythms used during the Ravel Bolero was exceptional! Just overall a terrific close to a wonderful season!

The Philadelphia Orchestra in it's final summer performance at Saratoga Performing
Arts Center displayed its virtuousity with a diverse ranqe of offerings. Rossini, Rachmaninoff, Grieg. Falla and Ravel all received enthusiastic and skilled musicianship..
The sololsts are so gifted, and 'the Philadelphia sound' is so special.
Charles Dutoit, contuctor provided dynamic leadership throughout.
Appropriately the evening ended with a spectacular round of fireworks..

A wonderful night with the Philadelphia; playing at their best with emotion and enthusiasm. Always respectful of the audience who came to see them, mixing the popular with the more cerebral, the audience showed their appreciation with multiple ovations and calls for more.

Marvin Hamlisch conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, playing piano, narrating autobiographical accounts of his life--all of it was wonderful. This was a very memorable evening. The orchestra was fantastic, the music selections were just great, soloist Mark McVey was terrific. I can't rave enough how enjoyable a concert this was.

The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the finest orchestras in the country, The concert was good. The violin concerto was played well. The Rocco Variations was also done well. The soloists were accomplished but neither soloist had any special flair. The audience was enthusiastic. Maestro Dutoit never does encores and does not seem connected to the audience. I prefer how Maestro Ormandy conducted the orchestra and connected with the audience. In spite of this I recommend programs of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the SPAC and I would certainly return again. It was a nice touch having enactors of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War encamped on the grounds with ample opportunity to speak with them. They added cannon to the 1812 overture which adds real spice to that piece.

I sat four rows away from the Rock Star of Cellodom. Never have I witnessed someone play with such passion and a obvious love for the actual instrument they are holding. Not to mention the the always impeccable precision of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Brilliant!

The soloists were amazing. The 1812 used to be even better when the local National Guard shot their Howitzer Canons off right on the beat.

A pleasant night out for dinner and then the concert, with my wife and son. We love all kinds of music, and I'm a musician myself for the past 40+ years. Other than a one-of-a- kind Frank Zappa show at UCLA's Royce Hall with a 75 piece orchestra, this was my first and only time I've heard a live orchestral performance. The players and soloists alike, were all excellent. I especially enjoyed Arabella Steinbacher. Amazing; with no sheet music, just pure heart, soul, speed and tone. I'd like to hear her again in 5 years!
Thank you players, sponsors (Skidmore) and SPAC, for a fine concert.

This was my first time seeing an orchestrea perform live and I absolutely loved it. I am so happy that my introduction was made with Marvin Hamlisch. I really did not know what to expect and I really loved how he talked to the audience and incorporated little snippets of his life to progress the program. In addition, the fact that it was all American composers drawing from movie and show tunes I was able to instantly relate to the music and feel comfortable. I will be back next year.

The show was outstanding and in all my 20 + years of attending the orchestra I've never witnessed an encore...tonight that all changed and they played two. The conducter was making his debut and I think he should be the principal conductor. The only down side was the sound man didn't always know when to cue up the mics of the performers and they could've had a little more volume. Other than that STANDING OVATION

I was quite impressed with the entire evening. All who were involved with the show did a fantastic job.
The " guest " conductor was animated, while adding informative tidbits from time to time you could tell he was enjoying the evening.
The Philadelphia Orchestra was a sheer pleasure to the senses.
The chorus added such a wonderful element to the evening, they were amazing!!
The four broadway performers were a surprising and wonderful addition ( I did not know they would be there).
I would have been pleased with just t he orchestra and the chorus, they were outstanding.
Great touch though adding the broadway actors to the mix.
a little more work on the mikes would have helped the men were a bit difficult to hear.

Dmitri Shostakovich died on August 9, 1975. Thirteen days later the Philadelphia Orchestra performed his Fifth Symphony. Ormandy and the orchestra were excellent as always, and the program contained a black-bordered tribute to the great composer that made the evening especially meaningful. But the 1975 performance was exceeded by Dutoit's last Thursday. The fifth is a symphony that can stall in the slow parts or get out of control in the fast parts, but neither was a problem. Dutoit led the orchestra past these hazards in what was the best performance of Shostakovich's Fifth I have ever heard.

Collaboration between The Hyde Collection and SPAC was truley groundbreaking. Seeing the images of Degas while listening to a trulry great performance by The Philadelphia Orchestra was amazing and brought vividly to life the connection between the music and the artistic creations of Degas. Our guests who are regulars at the Orchestra were extremely complimentary. The comments by Richard Kendall and Jill De Vonyar added greatly to understanding of the influence of music on the work of Degas.

We drive a 5 hour roundtrip in one day to attend events at The Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the Little Theater and have never been disappointed until now.
We could find little that was redeemable in the performace of the singers or how the orchestra, which should have been the back up for the singers, was conducted. The orchestra played wonderfully at the opening with a medley of West Side Story songs but then was in direct competition with the inept performance of the ill chosen singers. The chorus was not visible and could or should have been on risers so that they could project more as they were commendable in their performance.
The sound system was horrible. The orchestra was too loud for the two inexperienced male singers and one of the female singers screaming performance was extremely difficult on ones eardrums.
All and all my husband and I later agreed that we did consider leaving and wished we had at intermission. The fact that they ended with an ABBA song that could not be destroyed and performed some Jersey Boy's songs with the orchestra more subdued gave us some relief from this disaster.
