I saw The Nutcracker when I was a child. I wanted to surprise my wife and friends with something out of the ordinary. This was the best thing I could have picked. I was happy with everything from the time we walked into the building. The professionalism from the staff at the doors was excellent. My seats were excellent. The orchestra was breath-taking, I found myself trying to see what they were doing. The performers were truly impressive.
If i had to find something wrong, i would say that the beverage lines were too long. We had to finish our beverages very quickly after the intermission. This did not have an effect on the overall performance though. I will come back to more shows, and I will tell my friends about this show. Thank you for an amazing evening!!!

This show was exciting and wonderful and hard to believe that these are just kids! Dancers in the pre-professional program do all the roles including the lead roles and they are so good. Very impressive with beautiful sets and costumes. So magical. Even though the OBT Nutcracker has professional dancers in the lead roles, this one seemed much better to me.

This classic delighted my grandchildren (ages 4 and 6) and me with its beautiful costumes and wonderful music. The dancers are all so amazing.

The beginning was unexpected and very entertaining. Magic is a great way to grasp the attention of an audience 2-up ages! As the story progresses so does the Ballet. Great presentation, performance and energy.

Most people would think that an evening at the ballet would be very boring. If ballet were as prolific as movies you would be sure to run into some yawners. In this case, The Nutcracker, is a well known story and is easily followed, even by those not familiar with the story. The Carolina Ballet produced a wonderful performance of the famous ballet and, though this be only my second ever ballet, it was quite enthralling. For me it has piqued an interest in this form of art and, though I am little schooled in dance, I intend to make ballet, as a performing art, a personal enjoyment medium. The dancers were very talented and seemed to have boundless energy. The humor was unexpected but practical so it didn't detract from the story. The musicians had increadible stamina to play for 2 hours with only one short break. The dancers ranged from children to adults and everyone seemed to enjoy being a part of the program which, in my opinion, points to the range of persons who would also enjoy the performance. The Carolina Ballet truly is a treasure for North Carolina and I look forward to seeing more of their performances.

The Nutcracker was a Christmas gift for my beloved, who fell in love with the ballet! It was such a delight to watch the surprise on the face of someone determined not to be delighted...The Carolina Ballet made a new believer and lover of ballet!

I've been to a lot of Nutcracker performances and this was by far the worst one. It's not that they did anything wrong per say, it's just that the stage decorations, props, background stuff, and the costumes were very High School-esque. Very cheap and it looks like they had no time or money to make the scenes memorable and amazing. The ballet was adequate, and the overall experience was just average. The stuff mentioned above kind of ruined it. It didn't quite hold true to the story I have seen in most cities very well. But the dancers did a great a job and should always be commended for a great job!
The DeVos center is nice, but it's way too modern and cold. There are weird neon colored lights that are glowing all over the walls before the event, making it feel like you're in some alien spaceship?! Plus the center has nothing unique or special about it. It's just a clean, new, cold building, not the greatest venue for Ballet/Classical Music/etc.

We had terrible seats in the first act, I would recommend getting better seats, we couldn't see their feet the first act, so we missed all of the ballet moves. The 2nd act we went and sat in a tiered seating and the ballet was wonderful, we could see their whole body.....too bad we missed seeing the first act. Everyone in our section had the same problem.

The Nutcracker was beautiful and a great way to top off the holiday season. The mingling of illusions with the ballet was nice and the highlight of the show was the Waltz of the Flowers. Incredible. As always, the staff at DPAC were friendly, helpful and highly professional. I am always impressed with the efficiency of the restroom lines during intermission and the smooth exit from the parking garage. The place runs like a well-oiled machine!!

This show was a great introduction to ballet for my 6- and 8-year-olds. The magic elements and the beautiful costumes kept their attention. The beautiful choreography kept mine! Coffee's solo was spectacular! Thanks, Carolina Ballet, for a really fun afternoon.

I have seen quite a few plays and musicals, and let me tell you this performance was comparable to the best of what the world cities have to offer. The magic, the orchestra, the dancing, the costumes, the set designs -- I cannot pick just one favorite. All were exceptional. I truly could not have taken my two daughters and two of their children to see it, had it not been within driving distance. DPAC continues to polish it's crown as the premier performing arts theater in the region. It's not just a building that makes a theater great -- it takes an attentive, caring staff. It was an unforgettable evening.

This production of the Nutcracker 1) took too many liberties with the traditional story, 2) Leaned way too heavily on cheesy magic tricks, 3) Had a cast made up largely of children 4) Was just not very ballet-like, and 5) Seemed more like a volunteer group of ex high school theater friends than a professional ballet performance. Two stars is a generous rating.
