The new theatre building on the USF campus is wonderful. The orchestra members were very talented, the music was amazing. The cast was great, especially the ladies playing sisters. What great voices! The modern take took my mom off a little bit, but I liked students’ spin on an old opera. There were some funny parts. Choir was also very good. You should hear the ovations they all received! I would go again, and will recommend it!

This was a wonderful way to innaugurate the new concert hall in the new USF School of Music building. Cosi fan tutti in a very modern version. Naples of old brought forward to Naples the new. A classic tale by a talented cast. And deserving if the applause that was given.

Mozart's music makes anything worthwhile. That being said, the moral of the opera was "all women will always cheat on their men". The story mainly involves two couples, an older male and a maid. The men are told by the older male that their women will cheat, they refuse to believe it so they agree to trick their women with the guidance of the older man. The maid is paid to "play along", so eventually you have all the people that the women are seen talking to, pushing them to cheat. After much resistance they finally give in at which point the sinister old guy laughs and says "I told you so, and now I can have a good laugh at your misery".
You can take it at face value, at which point it is incredibly offensive and untrue. Or you can consider that during the time the opera was written it was common to assume that woman are generally at fault and have little willpower or decision making ability. But the opera was still distasteful to spectators at that time. So, I comfort myself by believing that the opera was meant to be politically charged and bring attention to the common view of women with the hope that the common view will be reconsidered.

The performance was outstanding. The set and the costuming were fantastic. The voices outstanding. It was another great production by the Portland Oprea company.

Some of the singing wasn't top notch, but more than passable with one or two stellar solo moments. Very funny premise, music score was great, there were a few moments I would have preferred to hear the orchestra rather than the performers. Didn't like the 50's period theme, this music begs for big powdered wigs, heaving corseted bosoms, and patches. Overall, good show.

Entertaining, funny, beautiful music and Motzart. What more can i say .. Definately worth seeing. Not as emotional as many operas but much funnier and light hearted however a rather pointed message about the fidelity of the human race. was fun ..

The music was wonderful, the opera too long, the plot too frothy for my liking.
The seats were terribly uncomfortable, I got so stiff that I could hardly stand up for the intermission. My wife said she tried all sorts of postures to keep her back from hurting.
$262 for the tickets, we left after the first act. We were at the opera for the first time, and probably for the last time.

Que bella ! Que divertente! Portland has a winner in this Opera company. The only cavil I might add is that Da Ponte should have had an editor (cut the length and pass the sillier parts past the master, Mozart; as I suspect, Wolfgang was more clever with wit and lacked only facility in Italian ). Definitely go and see and hear it. No point in being shocked, Cosi calls for abandoning your reality testing, as that is intentional for your entertainment. Feminists beware--peggiore !!
