I typically go to CJO concerts during the Sunday matinee and this time was no different. As I walked into the Southern, though, the crowd was larger than normal and the theatre seemed to bubble over with energy. It all made sense when the talented Byron Stripling invited a youth pianist named Micah to join Bobby Floyd on stage. The two played a ragtime tune that was amazing and totally thrilled the audience. The guests, Lewis Nash and Tia Fuller, were truly world class artists and I enjoyed the heart-felt Jazz they provided, void of a vocalist, just an instrument and wide open talent. The closing song brought the youth Jazz orchestra back on stage with the CJO. The sound of 40 instruments was powerful and at the very end of Chick Corea's Spain, Lewis Nash began a duel with the youth drummer, Luke. I truly enjoyed the back and forth, as if Luke was saying, I might not be as good as you- yet. You could really tell Mr. Nash enjoyed the playful nature of the exchange as both of them smiled and followed it with a fist bump. All in all, I enjoyed this concert as much as any concert and the crowd must have felt the same way. Standing ovation. Congratulations to Byron and the wonderful CJO for bringing such talent to Columbus. I look forward to the next event.
