I was excited to see Modest Mouse play, but wish I wouldn't have arrived at the venue until like 11:00. The cover band that played before them was alright, I enjoyed their mellow style, but it was a litte depressing to be honest, and it also put me in a down mood. I expected something more upbeat to pump me up for the show, or atleast a band with some stage presence. It almost seemed like this band didn't want to be looked at. They stopped playing at about 9:30, and then for almost the next hour and a half, all I saw was one or two band members from Modest appear on stage every now and then to tweak some of the instruments, along with Modest Mouse tracks playing in the background that I really couldn't hear at all.
I was a little confused at first about why it was taking so long to set up the instruments for the show when I'm sure they must've done this before anyone was allowed in, not to mention this was the 4th night of playing. My confusion then turned to annoyance and then eventually to irritation and anger as time went on and on and on, much like everyone around me. I heard a couple of groups almost start chants like "screw Modest Mouse" and then others who were just booing. It felt like they would never axctually start playing, and I must say that this was not a smart move on the band's part because watching them "set up" for the 45 minutes before they were supposed to come on was annoying enough, but then standing around pissed off and bored for another 30 minutes was almost unbearable. When they finally got going, the show was pretty good. I didn't really like their first song choice; after all that waiting and anticipation I expected something that would blow my ears off, but it was a more mellow song and didn't really get me excited for the rest of the show.
Overall, the show was good, but I think their little stall is unforgivable. It really gave off the impression that they didn't care that their was a huge audience waiting to see them, and that they had better things to do, like get drunk, backstage. I would reccomend this show to Modest Mouse fans, but my advice is: Show up 30 minutes after they are supposed to come on, and if you don't at least wear comfortable shoes because my legs and feet were killing me last night, and are definitely sore today.
