I'm a longtime Alanis fan and saw her in Atlanta on her Jagged Little Pill tour way back in the day. I go to a lot of shows and I'm totally comfortable with loud, chest thumping sound. Unfortunately the sound wasn't just loud, it was piercing and muddled and most of the time instruments were indistinguishable from one another.
As a musician, I find it appalling that I was unable to even discern the chord changes on You Oughta Know. The band *appeared* to be doing something interesting musically with the song but the sound sucked so bad I couldn't tell what.
Whatever treatment the sound guy had on her voice just made things worse. Cutting, thin, and overall unpleasant. We had reasonable seats -- 3 rows back in the 2nd balcony -- so it's not like we were sitting somewhere the sound system was compromised.
To be fair, the other shows I've seen at the Tabernacle have been more on the acoustic side of things so maybe this venue just blows for rock. I'm not going to take that chance, though, so will stick to other venues when catching rock acts in the future.
The band seemed tight and Alanis was doing Alanis so in other venues the show might be better. But the sound guy needs to be re-assigned to guitar stringing or some other less harmful task.
My two cents.
