The night started out with The Outlaws, a band I had never really listened to before. They opened up with some very tight vocal harmonies and nice guitar work. I was very impressed with their set, my personal favorite of theirs was Ghost Riders in the Sky.
After the Outlaws, and a short break of less than a half hour, a rarity of rig changes at concerts i've been to in the past, much to my surprise Styx took the stage. I was very surprised that they didn't headline. Styx Was phenomenal! Opening their portion of the show with Miss America, and continuing through hit after hit and concluding with Renegade, they had incredible showmanship and musicianship, and despite not having Dennis DeYoung, they were spot on to the album sound. Out of all the concerts I've been to, Eric Clapton, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, and Journey, just to name a few this was definitely one of the best.
After Styx, REO Speedwagon came out and did their set. Kevin Cronin had a lot of energy, but as far as overall talent and showmanship, they were a let down following Styx. Another thing that was sort of strange to me, and maybe not the average listener, was that on the harmonized guitar parts, which one player can obviously not do himself live, the guitarist played the harmony lines, which without the melody lines that they are supporting did not sound very musical, or very much like the album at all. I play guitar myself, and understand expanding on and changing the album solos, but i think he should have stayed more true to the melody in parts. Styx was far more exciting. The saving grace for REO was when Styx joined them to end the set with their single they penned together: "Can't Stop Rockin" which was really cool. You could feel the power of all the Marshall Stacks hit you right in the gut, and the vocals were also very powerful.
Overall, the Concert was Amazing. But Styx DEFINITELY should have closed the show, as they had way better showmanship and musicianship than REO. I recommend this to everyone and definitely plan on seeing Styx again!!
