I'd never seen Van the Man before, and had heard that his stage persona in concerts over the years leaves much to be desired, (especially by his huge following of fans who expect him to provide the warm and fuzzy feelings they have when they listen to "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance" and the like.
But like Bob Dylan, the sense one gets when watching Van live is that he is much more into creating the music in the first place, and with the process of collaboration with other musicians in the studio, than he is in re-hashing songs he has written in front of throngs of well meaning followers. (Others have written in their reviews "Mailing it in" or "Earning a paycheck")
If you think Van will change his stage persona of over 40 years just for you, you will be disappointed. If you go, with an open mind, and are lucky to sit in an area devoid of people talking like they are in their own living room, you might hear some moments of brilliance, especially in the lesser known songs, and you will likely have a good time.
As for the MYRIAD complaints about liquor sales being cut off when the show starts, or whining about Van starting on time, or only playing 90 minutes, people, get OVER yourselves! If you want to go see a legend perform, get there on time, get your freaking booze, sit down and shut up, otherwise, keep your complaining at home with some Van CD's and save the rest of us the honor of your presence!
