The Levon Helm band put on a 2 1/2 hour show that was a memorable excursion through Americana.. The 12 piece band was led by Levon Helm, who was not able to sing due to recent throat surgery. Levon kicked in a sharp backbeat throughout and even took turn on Electric Mandolin for a couple tunes. The vocals were spread out through 5 other members of the band including multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, Keyboardist Brian Mitchell, Theresa Williams, Amy Helm (Levon's daughter) and special guest Donald Fagen, on loan from Steely Dan. The show opened with a carousing version of "The Shape I'm In" and proceeded to feature music songs from Levon's recent cd "Electric Dirt" including a crowd-pleasing take on the Dead's "Tennessee Jed". The 4 piece horn section took turns soloing during the night, while adding a brassy back-up to the rollicking set. Donald Fagen had vocal leads on the Steely Dan classic, "Black Friday", the Band staple, "King Harvest" and traded vocals on "the Weight", where the Tuba player even took an instrumental verse. Other Band classic's covered included "It Makes No Difference", "Across the Great Divide" and "Chest Fever",with an extended guitar intro from Larry Campbell.. The encore featured Donald Fagen leading the way of Dylan's "I Shall Be Released".
