This was a very memorable evening for me because somehow I ended up in the 3rd row for Hay's performance, was in row 6 for Ryan Montbleau, who is an incredibly talented songwriter and performer.
I've always been a big Colin Hay fan, mainly for his voice and fun personality, he's just a character, someone you can't ignore. My appreciation for his talent began back in the 80s with Men at Work and was renewed in 2002 when I saw him on the "My Overkill" episode of Scrubs, then strengthened when I heard a song from his solo work on the film "Garden State."
When I heard of his scheduled tour which would land him at a venue near me I couldn't miss the opportunity, and as I sat in the 3rd row watching him perform some hits from Men at work and songs from his long solo career, I was enthralled.
Colin Hay likes to tell stories, and that's not a bad thing. He probably didn't play as many songs as he could have, but he engaged the audience with many comical and touching anecdotes. Including one about Paul McCartney washing his dishes. The stories, and Colin's appealing character gave the music that much more impact when he sang.
I will definitely go see Colin Hay again the next time he's in town.
