Ray Davies was wonderful at Berklee. A very beautiful, lyrical 45 minutes playing softer, prettier yet often comic versions of some of his songs with just Ray and his excellent sidekick on acoustic guitars, then over an hour rocking out with a full band. Not quite enough background vocals, but lots of humor, singalongs, adlibs and beautiful moments musically, plus a bit more poignance here and there than in the past, brief recognitions that time is passing, an allusion here and there to his age, his brother's stroke, the incident in which Ray was wounded in New Orleans, a story revealing that he wrote "Sunny Afternoon" while essentially in a week-long state of agoraphobic panic, and more, yet several times, including near the end, he sang and/or shouted, to us and it seemed to himself "Everything's going to be all right!" Such a talented, wry, sweet man and such great music. Dennis Brennan had some of the same qualities, too, in his opening set. A great night.
