This was a unique experience that not everyone would like, but I loved it. From the audience's reaction, most of them did too. The performers showed incredible energy and timing.
Much of the time, several drummers were either playing together perfectly or playing off of each other, also perfectly. Their timing was obviously the result of hundreds of hours of preparation. It was very entertaining.
Most of the time, it was drums only. Big ones, small ones, hit lightly, hit forcefully, in slow cadence, or in fast or even ultra fast cadence. There were parts when a flute or group of flutes joined in. While I have never heard of combining flute and drums, it really worked well.
This is a difficult show to describe because it has no counterpart in Western music. It was certainly nothing like you would see in a drum solo from an American or European drummer. Gene Krupa does not prepare you for what you see and hear in this show.
The costumes, the showmanship, the timing, all were designed very precisely to please the audience. And it did, 'nuff said.
From the opening of the curtain, the the close, I enjoyed it all.
