It was a great night for father's and their late teen / twenty something son's to share some valuable common ground. As I looked around the venue, there was an inordinate amount of dads with their sons, each one on a mission to spend some time with each other, exchange a couple high fives and knowing glances when their guitar hero's wailed. I bet many of us, about 12-15 years earlier, were all sitting around a campfire on an Indian Guide outing trying to spend some "guy time" with our boys.
I suspect like most, my son turned me on to Dream Theatre 5 or 6 years ago and immediately I heard the Zappa influences. Being a good father, I provided him with a carefully prescribed selection of Frank's stuff, (no Penguin in Bondage, Dinah Moe Hum or Torture Never Stops etc.). And if there's anything we agree on (not much these days) it's that there is some common ground somewhere between us.
My thanks to Mike Portnoy for being the Chief of the Prog Rock tribe. Continued success to you the rest of the guys, DT is doing more than making great music.
