The evening began right on time with the superb Pittsburgh Symphony performing Haydn's Symphony No. 67 in F major and Hovhaness's Symphony No. 2, Opus 132, "Mysterious Mountain" under the direction of Conductor Leonard Slatkin. The Hovhaness selection was enjoyable while the Haydn selection was extremely enjoyable and performed superbly. After an intermission the Pittsburgh Symphony and Sir James Galway performed Mozart's Concerto No. 2 in D major for Flute and Orchestra and Bizet's Fantaisis Brilliante on themes from "Carmen" for Flute and Orchestra. The combined sound of the excellent symphony with Sir James Galway's play on the flute was beyond superb. It is no wonder that he is referred to as "the man with the golden flute" and that he has been honored with the title of Sir due to his contribution to music. The performance was followed by two encores one of which was the performance of the Irish classic "Danny Boy". A perfect ending by this Irish master of his instrument, the flute. An exceptional evening!
