There are few artists who could leave the entire Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra on stage to go find his reading glasses, but Herbie Hancock, pioneer of electronic jazz, and pianist extraordinaire, could - and did. If that didn't serve to emphasize Mr. Hancock's stature in the pantheon of jazz musicians, his performance with classically trained pianist Lang Lang certainly did. The concert was equal parts intimate dueling piano bar and epic orchestral feat Hollywood Bowl style. The fusion of Lang's classical training (and dizzying talent) with Hancock's looser jazz stylings made for a thrilling night. Their rendition of Rhapsody in Blue, which departed from the original only in delicate flourishes on the keyboard - played more to pay homage to it's dynamism than anything else. Overall, the evening was high with excitement, even the audience's silence carried the whisper of anticipation for what would be heard next. It was clear that the fusion of jazz and classical inspired everyone from the conductor to tiniest audience member - from the first to the last note.

Herbie Hancock strikes again with his special brand of experimental collaborations. This time the incredible Mr. Hancock teams up with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and world renown pianist Lang Lang. The show was nothing short of amazing. Hancock has been known to work with artists across an array of unique styles reaching far beyond his jazz roots. While both artists performed incredible solo numbers the real meat of the show was when Hancock and Lang sat at the two facing pianos center stage. Lang Lang's spirited performance meshed perfectly with Hancock's own considerable charisma. From the first duet to the encore two artists at the top of their field delivered an evening of musical genius. Of course what concert pianist/jazz collaboration would be complete without Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Blending the classic composition with improvisation the two pianist turned Gershwin into something fresh and new.

Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang clearly enjoy playing together and their duets convey that pleasure. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was i superb form and the clarity of the sound, whether it was the full orchestra or a quiet string of notes from Hancock or Lang, was terrifically lucid.
the selection of pieces was excellent. The pacing of the concert was skillful.

I had high hopes for this event. I thought it would be interesting to see the different styles of Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang together. I am not a classical music or jazz connoisseur by any means, I was just looking for a good show.
While I appreciated the technical ability and virtousity of both performers, on the whole this concert was very disappointing. It almost put me to sleep. There was nothing dynamic about it. When both were playing together, it was hard to tell who was playing which part, so there was no benefit from there being two pianists. Probably a concert with either one playing alone would have been better. Or buying a CD. But as far as entertainment goes, this was a dud.

this was an excellent show. the venue, as always, was incredible. Hollywood Bowl is a unique and fun experience; what other venue lets you bring your own food and alcohol? HH was in excellent form, as was LL. Plenty of time was given to them individually, as a duet, and accompanied by the always wonderful LA Phil, and the musical selections were very nice. 5 stars.

I really thought we would get more jazz/funk from this show. instead we got classical music all night but the music we heard at the Bowl was amazing and powerful nonetheless. It was a great show and Herbie Hancock's ability to play the piano alongside Lang Lang and the LA Philharmonic was amazing and awe-inspiring!! Truly great show!!

only a few bars of funky stuff, mostly lame philharmonic repeats you can see any day of the week. If I wanted to hear Gershwin, i woulda went to my grandmas old age home and listened to her phonograph. another Hollywood bowl rip-off. They promise greatness but rarely deliver.

The concert was amazing. Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang have very distinct styles, but this concert brought them together to create an extraordinary experience. The evening was a medley of Hancock's whimsical Jazz and Lang Lang's fluid interpretation of the classics, along with a delightful Chinese folk piece, and an invigorating duel to end the evening. The venue also added to the experience both in terms of the ambiance and also in terms of the beautiful crisp sound that the natural amphitheater affords.

A perfect night of classical meets jazz. Though Herbie was the headliner, I have to say Lang Lang totally stole the show. He is a genius. It was also a special treat to see them with the LA Phil with conductor Axelrod. One of the best shows I've seen at the Bowl.

They walk out on the stage, white suit-black suit, older-younger, African American-Chinese and settle themselves onto the opposing, nestled pianos, the anticipation and excitement growing. HH excuses himself to change glasses. He feels like a familiar friend already. Then, off they go. LangLang with his floating, flying, dancing precision and range, Hancock with his close to the key, efficient almost blocky hand style, playing familiar vs tonal, rehearsed vs improvised, lyrical vs soul. Clearly delighting in the dance they created, they played off each other brilliantly. I love Rhapsody in Blue. This rendition was like no other, filled witih contrasts, precision synchrony and refreshing departures. Okay, so they hugged alot alot, and held hands alot alot, and bobbed heads over the microphone at frequent short range. Seemed a bit much, but if that's all part of the magic, and magic it was...so be it. When and where next? Count me in.
