They walk out on the stage, white suit-black suit, older-younger, African American-Chinese and settle themselves onto the opposing, nestled pianos, the anticipation and excitement growing. HH excuses himself to change glasses. He feels like a familiar friend already. Then, off they go. LangLang with his floating, flying, dancing precision and range, Hancock with his close to the key, efficient almost blocky hand style, playing familiar vs tonal, rehearsed vs improvised, lyrical vs soul. Clearly delighting in the dance they created, they played off each other brilliantly. I love Rhapsody in Blue. This rendition was like no other, filled witih contrasts, precision synchrony and refreshing departures. Okay, so they hugged alot alot, and held hands alot alot, and bobbed heads over the microphone at frequent short range. Seemed a bit much, but if that's all part of the magic, and magic it was...so be it. When and where next? Count me in.
