Not only was the Johnny Winter performance a classic not to have been missed, the warmup band, Matt Calderin was awesome. The drummer (who may have been Matt Calderin) reminded me of Buddy Miles both in his attack and mastery of the drums. This guy was a drummer's drummer. One of the " tastiest" rock drummers I have heard and certainly better than much of the local talent.
When Johnny Winter came on, around 9:30 PM or so, we were all well prepared for what was a great performance. Winter did not disappoint. He played one song after another with the same taste, talent and passion (though not visible from his impassive expression) that the greats of the blues world have displayed down through the years. Winter is right up there just under the greats such as Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy , etc.
My onlly gripe and the only reason the concert did not get 5 stars was the fact that smoking is allowed in the venue. At one point there was so much smoke in the air, my wife and I had to go outside to get a breath of fresh air. This is regrettable because the music performance was of the first order.
