show in fort lauderdale featured the legend but did not show the prowess and energy that we were introduced to years ago. fair enough, as 40 years have passed and johnny has sadly suffered some obvious physical malaise. nonetheless, he still has chops and when he picked up the slide at the end of the show, it was a worthwhile payoff.
one problem for me is that every single tune was the standard 1-4-5 blues format, which became tiring. not even a shift to a minor key. if he had played a single tune from the JOHNNY WINTER AND albums, studio or live, there could have been some variety.
backup band was sufficient.
the venue CULTURE CLUB is not the greatest, as the sound was muddy and the video screen behind the band was ineptly zoomed in on his strumming and picking hand and not the fretboard where all the real action take place. crowd was enthusiastic.
if you have never seen JW, then you might as well see him now. he was not bad at all but he was not great anymore.
