Opening act(s): Blake Mills (with Danielle Heim sp?) WAS AWESOME! Definately blues alternative style and sounded to me like he was trying to sing like Jim James (Which NO ONE can sing or match Jim James!) @

I knew the evening was going to be stellar -- I knew the show would meet expectations, because I know how great Lucinda WIlliams is as a poet, songwriter and musician. She started the evening playing acoustic "Side of the Road". She must've played 6/7 songs solo and then brought out Blake Mills, her 23 year old "OLD" guitar player. (He actually was the opening act and I was very happy to have heard his set -- amazing player). After a few more songs she brought out the whole band. I don't have the set list, but wrote down 19 songs and I know she did a few more than that from her entire catalog. I especially enjoyed "Tears of Joy", "Jackson", "Everything has Changed", "Concrete & Barbed WIre", "Born to be Loved" and "Bus to Baton Rouge -- my favorite. She seemed to really enjoy herself and relish hearing her songs improvised by such great musicians. It was soon after her birthday and she thanked the audience for being so good she said she was grateful. She thanked us for "Supporting LIve Music in this Down Economy". Well, I will never pass a chance to see her perform (if I can help it) -- once you experience the greatness that is Lucinda Williams you would agree!

Lucinda Williams is one of the best live performer touring today. Every show I see is better than the one before. The show at The Madison was incredible. She played an excellent set including songs from every era of her work. The highlight of the show for me was Righteously. She played for a good 2 hours and her band, Buick 6 were a wonderful compliment to her vocals.

I particularly liked how she introduced most of the songs with some explanation of where they came from, like "I think I lost it", which was particularly funny, though many of the songs were about lost causes and failed relationships. I can't recall them all, nor their order. @

This was a good show. I'd seen Lucinda before at the Merrill (after the 9/11 cancellation) and wasn't that impressed. This show made up for it. The band was tight and she was in good form -- really getting into it. Ten years ago she seemed a bit jaded but this time around she was totally plugged in. To quote one of her faves (and mine, too): she was so much older then, she's younger than that now.

If there was one drawback, it's that the volume was just too high on many of the songs, making it difficult to actually hear the lyrics. If you didn't already know them, you'd a been hard pressed to make them out. Why do most performers do that? Is it their sound techs that screw it up? Is it that everyone is deaf? Is it just me? Turning it down a notch or two would have actually improved the sound quality and made it more listenable.

The Birchmere is a fabulous venue, and the performers love it and that shows. The Duo format was ideal, just the right touches of accompaniment and stayed true to the original versions but with a bit more freedom. Dont pass on a solo or duo show.

I saw Lucinda Williams at WolfTrap and left early because the "show" was nothing more than her repeating the titles of her songs before she sang them. I thought it was lack of showmanship and thought no "value-added" -- better listen to her on CD. Still loved her songs and listening on my iPhone, house speakers etc. When she got the Birchmere gig I decided to give her a second chance and thought the intimate stage would be a better venue. The problem was........every song until about the last three -- was a sad, dirge-like, depressing song with no variation in tonality, dynamics -- musically completely boring. Thankfully she had Pettibone on guitar as she does no "interesting" licks. There was NO ENERGY in the show. A far cry from a Tom Rush who performs alone even, but varies the dynamics and tempo and songlist!! Then the awesome Bela Fleck and that show's energy blows you away. Lucinds doesn't vary or combine songs well and should get over the sad sack songs -- even Nashville is over that!!!. Listen to her CD's. Never go to a show. Very disappointing as I tried twice!!!

A terrific duo - Lucinda and her guitarist alone on stage. Lucinda played many old songs which were sung better than ever before; along with a few great new numbers. Doug Pettibone on guitar was spectacular.
The menu at the Birchmere is ho hum as is the food.

Thoroughly enjoyed Lucinda's show, accompanied only by Doug P. on an army of guitars, pedal steel, and mandolin. Lucinda was as upbeat as I've seen her, looked very comfortable, and her chemistry and musical interplay with Doug were terrific. Doug's playing is perfect for her songs. She included 2 or 3 very good new songs. Only thing preventing this from being a 5 is that she didn't do some of my favorites of hers, but then, she has so many good songs I don't blame her.

Lucinda Williams' show at The Birchmere Monday night was fantastic! Accompanied by the great string master Doug Pettibone, Lucinda performed a set of her songs from various recordings and sounded terrific. She also performed a few covers by some of her favorite influences like Dylan and Springsteen, championing as she does, the working class and causes dear to her. Doug played perfect accompaniment on both heart-wrenching and down and dirty solo breaks using his many beautiful instruments. He also provided harmony vocals on several songs. A real treat was the performance of several of Lucinda's new songs that she says may make it onto her next studio album. A great night for Lucinda fans.

But prior shows were considerably longer, allowing more of her best work (like Essence).

Is Lucinda's large body of both beautiful and riveting songs the reason I am thrilled by the set list each time I see her? Or is coincidence that her favorites are my favorites? The former is more likely. Lucinda takes you all over the place. And I can count on a few songs never being left out. "Joy" seems to have become a rally for not taking any crap in the vein of "Killing in the Name" by "Rage Against the Machine." If you don't know that one, check it out to see what I mean. Lucinda's thoughtful and complex music is never boring. I love her honest, humble demeanor.

I saw Lucinda at the Beacon and she was great. But this show at the tiny Bowery Ballroom was a totally amazing experience. Intimate, she was able to interact with the audience. she sang songs from her earliest to most recent albums for over 2 hours. Acoustics were perfect and by the end of the concert it felt like a party with everyone singing along and dancing.

Lucinda Williams is an American treasure! She's actually somewhat shy onstage, but she is such a great artist & performer. Her band knows just how to support her, quietly & with muscle when needed. The Bowery Ballroom show on 8/7/12 had a great set list, showcasing a lot of her quieter stuff upfront & then building on the 2nd hour of this 2 hour show. Two complaints: The neighborhood feels a little unsafe the later it gets & although the tickets say doors open @ 7:30, Lucinda came on at 10:00 which is a bit late for her fan base I would say. No mention of this upon buying the tickets. The great show made up for this in the end however.

A great show at a great venue! The Bowery Ballroom adds a lot to the evening with the ambience, but when Lucinda Williams is on stage....well, she makes the place rock and hum!

Lucinda delivered a terrific show, mixing up her set list from slow, ballad, to hard rocking...and, as always, lyically she is unmatched!

Advise all to see her whenever to can...and, I will go back to the Bowery Ballroom!
