I went mainly for Grand Funk and came away enjoying WAR's funky set more. A late arriving crowd pushed the start of the concert back 15 minutes.
WAR had overall superior musicianship and the lead singer was in fine voice. Funk was never one of my favorite styles, but their version with a Latin flavor was excellent. The bassist from Ecuador was especially enjoyable as was the saxapnone/flute player. The lead singer/keyboard player was excellent and helped maintain the band's high level of energy throughout the set.
Grand Funk spent too much time with aome of their hard rock numbers before they got to what everyone really came to hear - Im Your Captain (Closer to My Home), We're an American Band (encore) , Locomotion, etc. The lead singer was not in good voice and was off much of the night during solos. Fortunately he was pretty much OK during I'm Your Captain and American Band. He was much better in harmony with the keyboard player and drummer (Don Brewer).
Rating: WAR - 4 stars, Grand Funk - 3 stars. Overall 4 stars only because Grand Funk finally sang the hits I came to hear.
