Favorite moment: Clowning around during the band's break w/sock puppet avatars. @
Setlist: Mix of old and new. Cyclops Rock, Ana Ng, Meet James Ensor, Istanbul (Not Constantinople), Particle Man, They Might Be Giants, James K. Polk, Meet the Elements, What is a Shooting Star?, Why Does the Sun Shine?, My Brother the Ape, The Mesopotamians, Birdhouse in Your Soul, Dead, Whistling in the Dark, more. @
Opening act(s): 'The Guggenheim Grotto' was a great fit with TMBG; talented Irish folk-rockers with a gift for a good turn of phrase. They were funny with the crowd, too. @
The great thing about TMBG concerts is that since they are so prolific with their recording, each concert is different! This was my third, and it was even better than the other two.
The Giants had people jumping from the minute they came out, mixing old favorites with plenty of new stuff. They were pretty amused with the fenced aisle separating the halves of the ballroom (carded drinkers on one side, everybody else on the other).
Their newish drummer Marty Beller was excellent, as was Ralph Carney, who played saxophone, clarinet, and an impossible-looking split tin-whistle or something. I was very glad that 2/3 of the Band of Dans was still with them as well. Everyone sounded great. Two encores were demanded by stomping fans, after which Marty and John F. handed out TMBG bumper stickers to any and all. I bought the 'Here Comes Science' off a helper on stage, and found out to my delight when I got home that it was autographed by the Johns. Sweet!
