It is so hard to tell just how awesome this concert was. Megadeth didn't flub anything, not one note in one song; Mustaine's vocals were spot on - he got the growls and hisses from the album versions and everything. Don't let anybody tell you he's losing anything vocally! And of course he never lost anything from his monster guitar work. He was gracious to the audience throughout, but he was viciously funny towards his record label before tearing into brutal thrasher Headcrusher for which he used his new gorgeous Zero guitar and continued with it for the surprising next song, the beautiful A Tout le Monde. Hearing the whole audience singing along with this was a spiritual experience.
Speaking of beautiful guitars, it was an honor to see Chris Broderick on his new Vic Rattlehead axe. Marty Friedman's solos never sounded so good and it was fabulous to hear him live on his own work from their new album Endgame. The band premiered 44 Minutes from this album at this concert, so I got to see something live that I had dreamed of seeing - Broderick playing the mind twisting last solo from this song!
I don't want to forget Shawn Drover and James Lomenzo. It was hard to see Shawn with the smoke effects and him behind the giant drum kit, but I have to say what I heard him do made up for it totally. The drums sounded hard and crisp. The combination of this with Lomenzo's controlled thunder bass work anchored every song down to the ground. James is always fun to watch with his stage moves; a couple of times I thought he was going to stick his bass neck all the way out into the audience! But here's the only nit about the whole show - the bass/drums almost drowned out the vocals. The guitars cut through it all right, though they could have been a little louder.
All in all, it was a wonderful experience. I'm so glad I went and I hope I get to see Megadeth again - seeing them once was not enough. Even though they played 17 songs, it just seemed like it was over in a flash and I was starving for more.
