Wow, not sure where to begin! Let's start out by saying, I've seen LRB many times through the years, starting as early as 1977, this band tonight was as far from the original LRB that you could possibly get, even very far from the many incarnations, through out the years. They were once an Australian band with a American bass player, now they're an American band with an Australian guitar player! No Front Man, moved Wayne Nelson (bassist) into lead singing position. Although a good enough singer in his own right, not a Glenn Sorrock or even close. Two decent guitar players (vocal wise, both were only fair vocalists...Greg Hind sounded as if he had a bit of a cold, high notes were strained and out of reach on some songs. Keyboard players was so-so, nothing fancy, came out front for a gatorgan solo (which is so eighties) his sounds were a bit lacking, especially on grand piano and organ parts. He seemed more fit for toy noodily synthesizer parts. The drummer seemed good, tight and in the pocket, just wish they would have put him more in the mix, never had the chance to feel any kick drum the entire night!
The Band would take quite some time between tunes, a lot of wasted space so to speak, and also at times seemed like a mere garage band trying to emulate LRB songs. The mix was off here and there, I've heard other bands in that room, that weren't having the same problems of vocal drop outs and lowly mixed drums.
The crowd seemed very easy to please, many fueled by alcohol, dancing in the aisles when allowed. Plus the energy seemed quite high, for a baby booming Wednesday evening!
On a more positive note, I enjoyed seeing the people respond to the old fart jokes and the crowd singing back and forth, and the fact that many of us over 50 still came out midweek to see and listen to a popular act that began their career in the 70's.... this made for a tolerable evening!
I just don't know, possibly I'm to picky, but given the fact that LRB hasn't been close to popular using today's standards(in decades) and tickets were $30.00 plus, I feel they should have put on a better show then they did.
With that said, if they didn't hold the name LRB ( which makes me wonder how you keep a name, when not one original member is still in the band?) Anyhow, I feel they were a very, very good cover band, doing a fair job at covering the LRB.
