Well if I ever wondered where Justin Townes Earle gets his charisma from I need not look any further than Steve Earle. How I’ve gone all this time not seeing Steve perform is a mystery – raised in Texas, songwriter in Nashville in the 1970s whose mentors are Guy Clarke and Townes Van Zandt, roots/rock music performer in the 1980s, storyteller, author, actor, political activist, an addiction to heroin that kept him from music for years and a clean and sober comeback – this is the kind of artist I adore. Steve Earle with the Dukes (and Duchesses) featuring Allison Moorer are touring and were playing two nights in his adopted hometown of NYC. Moorer is Steve’s sixth wife (he’s been married seven times – twice to the same woman) and from the looks of them together on stage this marriage looks like a keeper.

The first night was at Town Hall and the second at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. A no-brainer for me because given the opportunity to sit, I will sit. Town Hall is an intimate theater, perfect for folk and jazz with not a single bad seat. The theater wasn’t full and that was a shame. I don’t know what the turnout was at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, but I hope he had a good crowd there.

The vocals didn’t sound good at the start of the show but improved a bit into the first set. Steve and Allison had their own guitar tech (the rest of the band had to fend for themselves) and there was one instance when Steve could not get sound out of a guitar and finally the tech went onstage and pressed the pedals in the correct order for him and you could see Steve and others in the band smiling.

Steve was quiet at the start but then began to tell stories. Some stories about the songs. Many stories about political causes. The political stories were never preachy. Not that it mattered because he was talking to a room full of people who felt the same way he did. Near the start he talked about how the evening was going to progress. “And it will progress. Because we are all progressives.” When he talked about teacher’s salaries and they should be paid more – which came up in the middle of a story of how he had an eighth grade education and only went to school for a while in ninth grade and how English was not one of his best subjects but that could be because the HS football coach was also the English teacher and being self-taught and a book about the Third Crusade – there was a huge applause and I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that half the audience were teachers who lived on the Upper West Side. Another story was about the coal miners striking in the 1970s and how they were the last trade union to be broken because they didn’t get any support. Or, after a song about NYC, about seeing a red tail hawk in Washington Square Park and that the reason we now see so many raptors that a short time ago were almost extinct is because we no longer use DDT and that sometimes one act can make great changes.

For me, the best story was when he performed “The Devil’s Right Hand.” He wrote the song in the 1970s before he had a record deal. Then in the 1980s he included it on an album, which the record company dropped. He re-recorded it for another album in the 1980s and that was his favorite version. Until they asked him to contribute a song to Brokeback Mountain and it had to sound like a song from the 1970s (it would be playing on a jukebox), so he went back to close to the original version. But that’s not the story that I liked so much. When he first performed the song everyone told him it was a gun-control song and he said it wasn’t. He owned an arsenal – he grew up in Texas and hunted and fished. He was also a hippie and protested against the Vietnam War and didn’t see any problem with all that. After he got out of jail and was now clean and sober – “In fact I am sober 17 years today. Well his mother handed a wild 14-year-old son to me. You may have met him. I didn’t know what to do with him. I’d only been sober for four and half months. He took a gun that I kept under the mattress. He knew it was there. I asked him to return it. I begged and pleaded. I searched his room. I searched the whole house. I called my brother and we strip-searched him. I decided that if I couldn’t get the gun from him then he’d have to be somewhere the gun wasn’t. My brother and I put him in the car – it was like trying to put a live deer in the trunk – and took him to boot camp. I’m not proud of this. They probably used the boys for slave labor. Well Justin isn’t stupid. It was January and at 1:00am I got a phone call telling me where he’d hidden the gun. And now it is a gun-control song. I don’t have a loaded weapon in my house. Some would call it flip-flopping. I call it a profound experience and changing your mind.”

Steve also sang “This City,” which is a song he wrote for his character, Harley, on Treme. He was asked to write song that the street musician would have written in 2005. And he played it on Harley’s guitar (This Machine Floats). With that song came another story. In rebuilding New Orleans, the plan was to get rid of the poor people. And in New Orleans a lot of musicians are poor people. Without musicians it wouldn’t be New Orleans. But the financial crisis happened and all the plans had to be dropped.

The evening started with roots-style music and then there was bluegrass and then pure rock. We heard songs from the new cd and also “Someday,” “Guitar Town,” “Union Man,” and “The Mountain.” Encore covers were “I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive” and “It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry.” Everyone in the band got a chance to sing lead on one song with Allison singing lead on three songs – just before the break. She sang a lullaby she sings to their 17-month-old son, who is accompanying them on the tour, “A Change is Gonna Come.” Steve and Allison also did two duets. One was “Every Part of Me.” I didn’t catch the name of bass player or drummer (both fantastic) but the other couple in the band is The Mastersons - Chris Masterson (an Elvis Costello lookalike) on guitar, pedal steel, mandolin and Eleanor Whitmore Masterson on guitar, fiddle, mandolin, who were also fantastic players. Allison played piano, accordion, and guitar also.

There’s an online review where the author thinks that Steve was preachy and pretentious and the band sucked because it’s not the same people he used to tour with. I know some people left at intermission but it was a long show (three hours) and it was an older crowd. I don’t have memories of previous shows to compare this to but, for me, this show was damn near perfect.

Steve Earle and The Dukes performed another amazing show Tuesday night at The Birchmere. The Dukes are a rock-solid outfit capable of kicking ass as well as, providing softer and often heart-wrenching backing support for Steve's poignant ballads. Fans of Steve were, as always, wildly enthusiastic and happy to have him back for 2 encores. He doesn't disappoint. He played songs from across his catalog including a few new songs slated for release on his upcoming album. Steve is great fun to watch and listen to even when he talks politics. Most in the audience are sympathetic to his personal political views and express their agreement almost unanimously. He inspires in the great troubadour and balladeer traditions of Guthrie, Dylan, Springsteen, etc. We need more artists like them, especially now. Like all true artists, Steve shows us things we can't see ourselves. Bravo Steve!

Steve Earle and The Dukes and Duchesses delivered a tour de force performance at the Birchmere on Saturday night. Two full sets plus two encores of great music played to perfection by the entire band. The great story telling and commentary added to my enjoyment. The harmony vocals and duets were stunningly and hauntingly beautiful. In short, I was floored. See this show--you won't regret it.

Steve and his band played two sets, a one-hour opening set and a one and one-half hour second set, including two encores. He started the evening by playing five songs from his new album, and then mixed in great songs from throughout his career with other new songs over the course of the evening. He played acoustic guitar and mandolin most of the evening, and then strapped on an electric guitar so the band could rock hard for the last eight songs. The Dukes and Duchesses were excellent musicians and back up vocalists: Chris Masterson played all of the right fills on a variety of beautiful guitars and sang back up, and his spouse Eleanor Whitmore played fiddle, mandolin, and guitar and also sang. Will Rigby played the drums, Kelly Looney played the bass, and Allison Moorer played piano and sang. At the end of the first set, she sang a duet with Steve, and he then left the stage and she did three songs to end the first set. During the second set, Kelly Looney sang a song and then Chris and Eleanor sang a song to together that was outstanding.

What an awesome show. Everyone was on the A game. Steve was great along with everyone else in the group.

The young lady in the Masterson was very impressive. A wonderful voice and multi talented: mandolin, guitar, fiddle, and piano.

We definitely got our money's worth.

Steve Earle is an American treasure. He's a fabulous musician, prolific songwriter and the thinking person's folkie. Awesome night, even though the venue had NO LEG ROOM in the seats. Not Earle's fault.

Steve Earle's show at the Wilbur was excellent. I have seen him on several occasions, both in Spain and in the U.S., playing solo and acoustic or with the Dukes, and he never disappoints.
The setlist was heavily based on Steve's last record "The Low Highway". I purchased the CD two weeks ago and I am still not very familiar with the songs, but they sounded beautifully. Steve's voice was at its best and he was very talkative, energenit and generous, as there were 6 songs in the encore.
He displayed his amazing skills with several guitars, two different banjos and a mandolin. Even though he did not play some of my personal favourites as "Goodbye" or "I ain't ever satisfied" I enjoyed the show very much. Also, I liked the venue very much, I was seated at a table pretty close to the stage, and had a great view and could hear every whisper. All in all, a night to remember...

Some artists slow down or mabe their creativity wanes, but that is not these case with Steve Earle. In fact he is still coming on strong and still improving !
The Mastersons were a huge addition to Steve's Band, he constantly mentions this may be his best band. The Mastersons released their first release "Birds Fly South" and ther are originally from Texas and now reside in Brookland.
Close for rehearsals with Steve and it shows, they quickly go from one song to the next.
So there is not much wasted time. Steve generally loosens up later in the set and let's his views be known, which is pure Steve, using his music to make change.

Steve and the band went quickly from one song to the next wasting no time, the band was very tight and professional. The Mastersons are a great addition to the band, Chris plays many guitars and pedal steel and vocals, his wife Elenor Whitmore is a treasure, she plays guitar, mandolin, keys and an incredible violin, her vocals should be featured more.
Steve was full of energy and played every song from the new release "The Low Highway".
I saw Steve last tour and he played maybe two of they songs from that tour, he is constantly
Resurrecting songs from past albums and sounding great, he said numerous times, that this
may be the best band he has ever had !
The Mastersons, who have there own release, opened and then Steve joined and played a little over two hours, a truly excellent show !

Steve is a great singer/songwriter and picks the best folks to help him translate his work into an outstanding and entertaining event. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this venue and were thrilled with the show. It just doesn't get any better than the Birchmere and Steve Earle!

Steve was in great form at the Birchmere on Tuesday night. He was much more relaxed and downright friendly than the past couple of times I've seen him (I'm a long time fan). Really seemed to be enjoying himself and looking forward to his European tour. Made the new CD come alive with particularly strong performances of "Pocket Full of Rain" and "After Mardi Gras." I thought "Warren Hellman's Banjo" was a throw away going into the show, but have a little more appreciation for the tune after hearing Steve talk about the actual Warren Hellman. He worked in a good number of his older tunes which all worked seamlessly with the new material. What a songbook to choose from! He went deep in the encores - Devil's Right Hand and Continental Trailways Blues. I'm always happy to hear Steve's political speeches, and he did not disappoint there either. Great show from an American treasure. Don't miss it.

Concert review - Steve Earle and the Dukes at the Birchmere - Tuesday, May 7. Steve is the man, folks. He's looking really good - thinner both in the body and on the top of his head, if you know what I'm sayin'. He has adopted The Mastersons into the Dukes, the Mastersons are a duo and are a force of nature on their own. Steve came on to introduce them and said, "Well...we kinda whipped together a band for these guys - so tonight for the first time, they're using the Dukes' drummer and bass player (Kelly Looney) - have at it, y'all." Or something to that effect. Kelly obviously loved playing with The Mastersons, whose music is original, slightly off kilter and the guitar player killed it every time. Eleanor, the woman in the duo - can play fiddle, lead, rhythm guitar and sings like Lucinda Williams, a sound Steve loves. When they broke and Steve came on - he started with new tunes from The Low Highway release. Several of these songs retell the New Orleans/Katrina story, Steve is pissed that NOLA is still suffering, and so should we all be. Then Steve and the Dukes did a rendition of "If you're thinking about breaking my heart..." - that broke my heart. Who knew that Steve Earle is a torch singer? Not moi. “Tanneytown,” UFB alert, homeys. Steve covered "The Low Highway" well - we should all own it, and everything else Steve has done. BTW, I am proud possessor of ALL Steve Earle releases, I merched at the Birchmere and completed my Steve collection.  Steve played more electric guitar than I had seen/heard in years, and get this - he played piano! He told a funny story about how he's learning how to play the 12-keys and that this particular gig was one of the first where he played in public. Took it home, the guy is a musical Leonardo Da Vinci. Steve talked about his brief stint on the television series "Treme" - he said his music has been playing long since he was done with his appearances. He was ragging on DC and politics - of course - being so close to the main line, just over the Potomac from the whole political enchilada. Just say it loud and say it proud, folks - Steve Earle, Music God. And please go get The Mastersons "Birds Fly South," and Steve Earle's newest, "The Low Highway," - only if you're into great music, instead of junk. Note to all adults with a credit card – Steve and the Dukes are heading for Europe – that’s a well-spent dollar, get it on, get it gone – support Steve, because he supports us and keeps his hands dirty by preference - meaning he leans left politically and we need him. And he has ALWAYS told it like he sees it. About himself, and the world. Not a hider. A seeker. Amen.
